🔧 Sierra 1500 - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Sierra 1500, the headlight bulbs are serviced from behind the headlamp housing under the hood. You’ll remove the dust cover (if equipped), twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything—no bumper removal needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let headlights cool first—bulbs get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ If your hands are tight near wiring, disconnect the negative battery cable.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm wrench
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlights OFF and remove the key.
  • If you want extra safety, use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable (black cable) and keep it from touching the terminal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access behind the headlamp

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlight assembly on the side you’re working on.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Identify which bulb you’re replacing

  • Low beam is typically the H11 bulb; high beam is typically the 9005 bulb.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.

Step 3: Remove the dust cover (if equipped)

  • If there’s a round cover behind the bulb, twist it counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
  • Wipe any dirt away with a clean microfiber towel so debris doesn’t fall into the housing.

Step 4: Unplug the bulb connector

  • Grip the electrical connector at the back of the bulb.
  • Pull straight back to unplug it (wiggle gently if it’s tight).

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • Without touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks in place (snug by hand—no tools).
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a microfiber towel before installing.

Step 7: Reconnect and re-seal

  • Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the dust cover (if equipped) by twisting clockwise until snug.

Step 8: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–7 for the other headlight so both bulbs match.

✅ After Repair

  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it using a 10mm wrench (snug—do not overtighten).
  • Turn headlights ON and confirm low beams and/or high beams work on both sides.
  • Check that the dust covers are fully seated to keep moisture out.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb brand and whether you do low, high, or both)

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
