📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground facing a wall or garage door.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlights OFF.
- Turn the vehicle OFF completely.
- Move the smart key at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and let the bulbs cool for several minutes.
- For best light color and brightness, replace bulbs in pairs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Bulbs
- Use the hood release inside your Highlander, then lift the hood and secure it.
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp housing.
- The low beam bulb is toward the outer headlamp area, and the high beam bulb is toward the inner headlamp area.
- A headlamp housing is the plastic assembly that holds the bulb and lens.
Step 2: Improve Access if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic push clips blocking your hand access.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small fork-shaped tool that lifts plastic retainers without breaking them.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any small bracket or cover bolt that blocks access.
- Set clips and bolts on a clean microfiber towel so they do not get lost.
Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Low Beam Bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a flashlight to locate the driver-side low beam bulb connector behind the headlamp.
- Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise by hand about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Do not twist or pry against the plastic housing.
Step 4: Install the Driver-Side Low Beam Bulb
- Hold the new low beam bulb by the plastic base only.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it gently with a clean microfiber towel.
- Insert the new bulb into the headlamp housing by hand.
- Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 5: Remove the Passenger-Side Low Beam Bulb
- Use a flashlight to locate the passenger-side low beam bulb connector.
- Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight back.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise by hand about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
Step 6: Install the Passenger-Side Low Beam Bulb
- Hold the new low beam bulb by the plastic base only.
- Insert it into the headlamp housing by hand.
- Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until fully locked.
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb sits flat and sealed.
Step 7: Remove the Driver-Side High Beam Bulb
- Use a flashlight to locate the driver-side high beam bulb behind the inner headlamp area.
- Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight back.
- Turn the high beam bulb counterclockwise by hand about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
Step 8: Install the Driver-Side High Beam Bulb
- Hold the new high beam bulb by its plastic base only.
- Insert it into the headlamp housing by hand.
- Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Remove the Passenger-Side High Beam Bulb
- Use a flashlight to locate the passenger-side high beam bulb.
- Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight back.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise by hand about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
Step 10: Install the Passenger-Side High Beam Bulb
- Hold the new high beam bulb by its plastic base only.
- Insert it into the headlamp housing by hand.
- Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 11: Reinstall Covers, Clips, or Brackets
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall any plastic push clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any small bracket or cover bolts.
- Tighten small cover bolts snug only. Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
Step 12: Test the Headlights
- Turn the vehicle ON enough to operate the lights.
- Turn on the low beams and confirm both sides work.
- Switch on the high beams and confirm both sides work.
- Use the wall or garage door to compare beam height and brightness side to side.
- If one bulb does not light, turn the vehicle OFF and recheck the connector seating.
✅ After Repair
- Make sure all electrical connectors are fully clicked into place.
- Check that no tools or old bulbs are left in the engine bay.
- Confirm both low beams and both high beams work before driving at night.
- If the beam pattern looks much higher or lower than before, have the headlight aim checked.
