🔧 Sierra 1500 - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the headlamp assembly, swap the bulbs, then reinstall everything. On your Sierra 1500, the headlight bulbs are accessed from the back of the headlamp housing once the housing is pulled forward.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool fully; halogen bulbs get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you use gloves, make sure they’re clean and dry.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip remover
  • Panel clip pliers
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (commonly 9006; match what’s printed on your old bulb) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (commonly 9005; match what’s printed on your old bulb) - Qty: 2 (only if replacing high beams too)
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • đź’ˇ Turn headlights OFF and open the hood.
  • 🧼 Put on nitrile gloves to keep oil off the new bulbs.
  • 📝 If you’re unsure which bulbs to buy, you can remove one bulb first and read the bulb number printed on the base.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the upper radiator cover / air baffle

  • Use a trim clip remover (or panel clip pliers) to pop up the plastic push-clips along the top cover, then lift the cover off.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently pry the center up with a small flat-blade screwdriver, then remove the whole clip.
  • Keep clips in a cup so none get lost.

Step 2: Pull the headlamp retaining pins

  • Locate the two vertical retainers at the top of the headlamp assembly (they look like metal “pins”).
  • Use panel clip pliers to grab and pull each retainer straight up and out.
  • Definition: A “retainer pin” is a removable locking pin that holds the headlamp housing in place.

Step 3: Remove the headlamp assembly

  • Use your hands (and a flashlight if needed) and pull the headlamp assembly straight forward from the truck.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—don’t yank hard.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb(s)

  • From behind the headlamp, identify the bulb you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam).
  • Press the electrical connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb (use your fingers; if needed, help gently with a small flat-blade screwdriver).
  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it out.
  • Use a flashlight and read the bulb number printed on the base so you install the correct replacement.

Step 5: Install the new bulb(s)

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing (do not touch the glass).
  • Twist the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall the headlamp assembly and retainers

  • Align the headlamp assembly and push it straight back into position by hand.
  • Reinstall the two retaining pins by pushing them straight down until fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the upper cover and clips

  • Set the upper cover back in place.
  • Reinstall each push-clip by pushing the outer body in, then pressing the center pin down flush (use your fingers or panel clip pliers gently).

âś… After Repair

  • 🔦 Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work (low beams and high beams if replaced).
  • 🧭 Check aiming: shine the lights at a wall at night; both beams should look even side-to-side.
  • đź‘‚ If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully clicked in.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$120 (parts only, depending on which bulbs you replace)

You Save: $60-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
