🔧 Malibu - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Malibu, each headlight assembly has bulbs accessed from behind in the engine bay. You’ll remove the old bulb(s), install new ones without touching the glass, then test the lights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights off and let bulbs cool; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—skin oils on the bulb glass can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass; hold it by the base.
- ⚠️ If you choose to disconnect the battery, use a 10mm wrench and keep the key out of the ignition.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (9006) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Qty: 2 (optional, if you’re replacing highs too)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and identify the bulbs
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight assembly.
- The low beam (9006) and high beam (9005) are the round twist-lock bulb sockets at the back of the headlight.
Step 2: Create working space (only if access is tight)
- If something is blocking your hand, loosen/remove the nearby plastic ducting or covers using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and/or a flat-blade screwdriver.
- If you encounter plastic push-clips, remove them with a trim clip removal tool (it slides under the clip head to pop it up).
Step 3: Remove the first bulb (driver or passenger side)
- Reach behind the headlight and grasp the bulb’s plastic base.
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise (about a quarter turn) by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector off the bulb base.
- If it’s stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to help depress the tab—don’t pry on the wires.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves (prevents oil on the glass).
- Plug the electrical connector onto the new bulb until it clicks.
- Align the bulb’s tabs with the headlight housing slots, insert the bulb fully, then twist clockwise to lock.
- Tip: If it won’t lock, it’s not seated.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 3–5 for the other headlight.
- If you’re replacing high beams too, repeat the same process on the high beam bulb socket (use the flashlight to confirm you’re on the correct bulb).
Step 7: Reinstall anything you removed
- Reinstall ducts/covers and tighten fasteners using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm wrench.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlight switch ON and verify: low beams, high beams, and turn signals (if you disturbed nearby wiring).
- Check that both headlights match in brightness and color.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is fully locked.
