🔧 Suburban - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Suburban, the easiest way to replace headlight bulbs is to pull the entire headlamp assembly forward by removing the two locking pins at the top. Then you twist the bulb sockets out from the back, swap the bulbs, and reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights off and let bulbs cool for 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life. Use clean gloves.
  • ⚠️ Support the headlamp assembly so it doesn’t scratch the bumper or fender.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the headlamp locking pins

  • Locate the two vertical locking pins at the top of the headlamp assembly (right behind the grille).
  • If they’re tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry upward, then pull them out by hand.
  • If needed, use needle-nose pliers to pull the pins straight up. (Needle-nose pliers are slim pliers for grabbing small parts.)

Step 2: Pull the headlamp assembly forward

  • Use both hands to slide the headlamp assembly straight forward.
  • Place a clean shop towel on the bumper edge to prevent scratches, and rest the assembly gently against it.
  • Don’t force it; it slides straight out.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb(s)

  • From behind the headlamp, identify the bulb you’re replacing:
  • Low beam is typically the H11 bulb; high beam is typically the 9005 bulb.
  • Use your flashlight to see the socket tabs clearly.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • Press the electrical connector tab and unplug the bulb. If it’s stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help lift the tab.

Step 4: Install the new bulb(s)

  • With nitrile gloves on, plug the new bulb into the connector until it clicks.
  • Insert the bulb into the headlamp housing, making sure it sits flush.
  • Twist clockwise by hand to lock it in place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with the clean shop towel before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall the headlamp assembly

  • Guide the headlamp assembly back into position, aligning the tabs/pegs.
  • Reinstall the two locking pins by pushing them straight down by hand until fully seated.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other headlamp assembly so both sides match in brightness and color.
  • Replacing bulbs in pairs helps even lighting.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test low beams and high beams.
  • Walk in front of the Suburban and confirm both sides are equally bright.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights off and re-check that the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is fully twisted/locked.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb brand and whether you do low + high)

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
