🔧 Lancer - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs from behind the headlamp housings in the engine bay. Most of the job is careful access and not touching the new bulb’s glass, which can shorten bulb life.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: factory halogen headlights; HID notes included below.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF, remove key, and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes before touching.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can cause hot spots and early failure.
- ⚠️ If your Lancer has HID (xenon) low beams, do not power on with parts unplugged; HID systems use high voltage.
- ⚠️ If you need to loosen battery/air intake parts for access, avoid shorting tools across battery terminals.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (Halogen H11) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (Halogen 9005) - Qty: 2
- Low beam headlight bulb (HID D2S xenon) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and set your flashlight so you can see behind each headlamp.
- If access is tight on one side, be ready to loosen the air intake snorkel or battery hold-down (you’ll only loosen what you must).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (Low vs High)
- Use your flashlight to look behind the headlamp housing.
- The low beam is the main night-driving bulb; the high beam is the bright “flash/pass” bulb.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for even color.
Step 2: Create working room (only if needed)
- If something blocks your hand, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen the nearby intake duct bolts/clamps, or remove push-clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- If a small cover uses screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Move the part just enough to reach the bulb—don’t force it.
Step 3: Remove the rear dust cap (if equipped)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlamp and remove the round rear cap (typically twists off by hand).
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- For most halogen bulbs, rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/8–1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- Set the old bulb aside (glass away from anything flammable).
Step 6: Install the new bulb (Halogen path: H11 low beam / 9005 high beam)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing (tabs must line up).
- Rotate clockwise to lock it in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- If you touched glass, clean with alcohol.
Step 7: Install the new bulb (HID path: D2S low beam, if equipped)
- HID bulbs usually have a retaining ring/lock. Remove and reinstall it carefully (by hand).
- Install the D2S bulb fully seated and locked; then reconnect the igniter/connector.
- Do not turn the lights on until everything is reassembled.
Step 8: Reinstall dust cap and any parts you moved
- Reinstall the rear dust cap by hand (snug).
- Reinstall any intake pieces, clips, or screws you removed using the 10mm socket, trim clip removal tool, and Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Any small 10mm fasteners: tighten snug—do not strip plastic mounting points.
Step 9: Repeat on the other headlight
- Perform the same steps on the opposite side so both bulbs match in brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm: low beams work, high beams work, and no flickering.
- Walk in front of the car and confirm both sides match in color and intensity.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check the connector fully seated and bulb locked in place.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30-$180 (parts only, depending on halogen vs HID)
