🔧 Grand Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Grand Cherokee, the headlight bulbs are accessed from the engine bay behind each headlamp housing. The job is mainly unplugging the connector, twisting the old bulb out, and installing the new one without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. If you do touch it, clean with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free towel.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key out of the ignition while working near the fan and belts.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but it’s okay to disconnect the negative terminal if you want extra safety.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (9006) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and position your flashlight so you can see behind the headlamp.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the negative terminal clamp and move it aside so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (Low vs High beam)

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly.
  • The two headlight bulbs are the low beam (9006) and high beam (9005). They twist-lock into the housing.

Step 2: Remove the electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the connector at the back of the bulb and pull it straight off.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently while pulling—don’t pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Keep the new bulb in your gloved hand (avoid touching the glass).
  • Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seals (not on the bulb glass).
  • Insert the bulb into the housing, align the tabs, then twist clockwise until it locks.

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it seats fully.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (and for the other beam, if you’re doing both)

  • Use the flashlight and repeat Steps 2–5 for the matching bulb on the other headlamp.
  • Repeat again if you’re also replacing the other beam (high or low).

Step 7: Reconnect the battery (if disconnected)

  • Reinstall the negative terminal and tighten using a 10mm socket with a ratchet until snug.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn headlights ON and verify: low beams work, high beams work, and both sides match in color/brightness.
  • With the lights on, gently tap around the connector area by hand to confirm there’s no flicker (loose connector check).
  • If one side still doesn’t work, swap the left/right bulb (quick test) to confirm if it’s a bulb issue or a vehicle wiring issue.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$90 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)

You Save: $55-$90 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
