🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Tacoma is a beginner-friendly job. The bulbs are accessed from behind each headlamp assembly in the engine bay, so you usually do not need to remove the headlight housings.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition OFF before touching any connectors.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Replace both bulbs together so the brightness and color match side-to-side.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair, but keep the headlight switch OFF.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
  • 🔎 Open the hood and locate the back of each headlight assembly. The low beam and high beam bulbs are mounted separately behind the headlamp.
  • 📌 A bulb connector is the plastic electrical plug attached to the back of the bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Find the Bulbs

  • Use the hood release inside the cab, then lift the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlight assembly.
  • Identify the bulb connector at the rear of the headlamp. The low beam and high beam are separate bulbs.
  • Work on one bulb at a time.

Step 2: Disconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
  • If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help release it.
  • Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb. Do not pull on the wires.
  • A locking tab is the small flexible clip that keeps the plug from sliding off.

Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Headlight Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to grip the bulb base.
  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Do not force it. If it does not move, check that it is fully turned to the unlock position.

Step 4: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves and hold the new bulb only by the plastic base.
  • Align the tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing.
  • Push the bulb straight into the housing.
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks firmly in place.
  • No torque wrench is used here; tighten by hand only until seated.
  • Never touch the bulb glass.

Step 5: Reconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your hand to push the electrical connector straight onto the new bulb.
  • Listen or feel for the connector locking tab to click into place.
  • Gently tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is secure.

Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb

  • Use the flashlight to locate the same bulb position behind the passenger-side headlight assembly.
  • Use your fingers to press the connector locking tab and pull the connector rearward.
  • Use your gloved hand to rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out.
  • Install the new bulb by aligning the tabs, pushing it in, and rotating clockwise until locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Check Both Headlights

  • Use the headlight switch to turn the headlights ON.
  • Check that both new bulbs illuminate evenly.
  • Use the dimmer stalk to switch between low beam and high beam if you replaced both sets.
  • If one bulb does not light, turn the lights OFF and recheck that connector.

Step 8: Final Fit Check

  • Use the flashlight to confirm each bulb is fully seated and locked.
  • Make sure no wiring is pinched or stretched behind either headlamp.
  • Close the hood securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test low beams, high beams, and flash-to-pass function before driving at night.
  • ✅ Park about 25 feet from a wall and check that the beam height looks even side-to-side.
  • ✅ If the beam pattern looks crooked, one bulb may not be seated correctly.
  • ✅ Dispose of old halogen bulbs carefully. They are glass and can break.
