🔧 Camry - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Camry, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. Replacing them restores safe nighttime visibility and prevents one dim/burnt bulb from overworking the other.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool 10 minutes; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you must touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight so you can clearly see behind the headlight.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulbs you’re replacing
- Low beam = the normal headlights used at night (typically H11).
- High beam = the “brights” (typically 9005).
- Most people mean the low beams.
Step 2: Access the back of the driver-side headlight
- Stand at the driver-side fender and look behind the headlight housing.
- Use a flashlight to locate the bulb base and wiring connector.
- If a plastic clip or small cover is in the way, gently release it using a small flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector
- Grip the connector (not the wires) and pull it straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise about a quarter turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
- Set the old bulb aside.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Twist the bulb base clockwise until it locks in place.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth, then let it dry.
Step 6: Plug the connector back in
- Push the connector onto the bulb until it seats fully.
- Reinstall any clip/cover you moved using the small flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
Step 7: Repeat on the passenger side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 on the passenger-side headlight.
- Replacing in pairs keeps brightness even.
Step 8: Test the lights
- Turn the headlight switch ON and verify both sides illuminate.
- Switch to high beams and verify those work too (if replaced).
✅ After Repair
- Check that both headlights are the same color/brightness.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light: turn lights OFF, recheck the connector is fully seated, and confirm the bulb is locked in.
- Make sure no wiring is rubbing on moving parts or hot engine components.
