🔧 Civic - Headlight Bulb Replacement

You’ll replace the burned-out headlight bulbs by accessing the back of each headlight housing from under the hood. The job is mostly a “twist-and-remove” procedure, but space can be tight on your Civic, so take your time.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights OFF and let the bulbs cool fully (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
  • ⚠️ If you loosen the battery for access, keep tools away from the positive terminal to avoid sparks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (9006/HB4) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (9005/HB3) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the engine off, and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and use a small flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight housing.
  • Decide which bulbs you’re replacing: low beam is the main headlight; high beam is the brighter “flash” bulb.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which bulb is out

  • Turn the headlights on briefly to identify the failed side (left/right) and whether it’s low beam or high beam.
  • Turn the lights off and let the bulb cool before touching anything.

Step 2: Access the back of the headlight (under the hood)

  • Stand at the front of the car with the hood open.
  • Reach behind the headlight housing. You’ll feel a wiring plug going into the bulb socket.
  • If space is too tight on the driver side, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen the battery hold-down just enough to create working room. Do not remove the battery cables.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the connector at the bulb (not the wires) and pull it straight back to unplug it. If there’s a small lock tab, press it with your thumb while pulling.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Grip the bulb base and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise (to the left).
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Use your small flashlight to check the socket area for dirt or moisture.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (low beam 9006 or high beam 9005)

  • Without touching the glass, align the bulb’s tabs with the slots in the housing.
  • Insert the bulb fully, then rotate clockwise (to the right) until it locks in place.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth before installing.

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector straight onto the bulb until it seats firmly.
  • Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s locked and won’t fall off.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the matching bulb on the other headlight as well (left and right). Bulbs age together; pairs match brightness.

Step 8: If you loosened the battery hold-down, tighten it back

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension to snug the battery hold-down back in place.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on low beams and high beams and verify both sides work.
  • Check that the rubber dust cover (if equipped behind the bulb area) is seated to help keep moisture out.
  • If one side still doesn’t work, re-check the connector seating and bulb orientation (it must fully lock with a clockwise twist).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,000-₹2,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹500-₹1,800 (parts only, depending on bulb brand/type)

You Save: ₹500-₹1,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹500-₹1,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
