🔧 Highlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Highlander, the “headlight” can mean the low beams (most common) and the high beams. The job is done from behind the headlamp in the engine bay—no need to remove the whole headlight assembly in most cases.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil shortens bulb life.
- ⚠️ If your low beams are HID (xenon) with a ballast, disconnect the battery before unplugging anything.
- ⚠️ Keep keys away from the vehicle so lights can’t auto-turn on.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip removal tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (Halogen H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Low beam headlight bulb (HID D4S) - If equipped, replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam bulb (9005) - If you’re replacing high beams too - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Optional, small packet - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and wait 10 minutes for bulbs to cool.
- If your low beams are HID (xenon): disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and reinstall later to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Quick bulb ID: HID setups usually have a “D4S” bulb and a box/ballast on the headlight; halogen uses an H11 bulb with a simpler connector.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of the headlights
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear bulb covers/connectors behind each headlight.
- On the passenger side, if the air intake duct blocks your hand space, remove the plastic clips using a trim clip removal tool, then move the duct aside.
- On the driver side, if the washer fill neck blocks access, unclip it carefully by hand (no tools usually needed).
Step 2: Replace the low beam bulb (each side)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Locate the low beam bulb at the back of the headlight and unplug the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use needle-nose pliers gently only if the tab is stubborn).
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about 1/8 turn and pull the bulb straight out.
- Install the new bulb (H11 or D4S, depending on your setup) without touching the glass, then rotate clockwise to lock it in.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks. Light tug confirms it’s locked.
Step 3: Replace the high beam bulb (optional, each side)
- Find the high beam bulb socket (usually separate from the low beam) and unplug it by hand.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb, lock it with a clockwise twist, then reconnect the connector.
Step 4: Reinstall any moved components
- Reposition the washer neck if you moved it.
- Reinstall the air intake duct and push the clips back in (use a trim clip removal tool to line up clips if needed).
- If disconnected earlier, reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start your Highlander and test: low beams, high beams, and turn signals.
- If one side doesn’t light, turn lights off and recheck the connector seating and bulb lock position.
- At night, verify both low beams have similar brightness and aim; misalignment may indicate the bulb isn’t fully seated.
