🔧 Forester - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Forester, the headlight bulbs are serviced from behind the headlight assembly in the engine bay. The job is mostly access and careful handling so you don’t damage the bulb or leave skin oils on the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Quick check before I tailor this perfectly: do you mean low beams (most common), high beams, or both low + high?
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool completely before touching them (bulbs get very hot).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb’s glass (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If you have very limited space or jewelry/metal tools near wiring, disconnect the negative battery terminal.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 6" extension
- Flashlight

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and open the hood.
- Put on nitrile gloves (keeps the bulb glass clean).
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing.
- The low beam (H11) is typically the easier-to-burn-out main headlight you use at night.
- The high beam (9005) is the brighter “brights” bulb.
Step 2: Make room to reach the back of the headlight
- Passenger side: use a trim clip removal tool to pop up the plastic clips on the intake snorkel, then use a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension to remove any 10mm fastener holding the snorkel (if equipped).
- Lift the snorkel out of the way by hand.
- Driver side: if the washer filler neck blocks access, use the trim clip removal tool to release its clip and move the neck slightly aside (do not kink the hose).
- Tip: Don’t force parts—there’s usually one hidden clip.
Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector
- Reach behind the headlight and locate the bulb’s electrical connector.
- Press the locking tab with your gloved thumb and pull the connector straight back by hand.
- If it’s stubborn, gently wiggle while pulling—do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise (about a quarter-turn) by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
- Use the flashlight to check the housing for dirt or moisture.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (no glass touching)
- With nitrile gloves on, align the new bulb’s tabs with the slots in the housing.
- Insert the bulb fully, then rotate clockwise by hand until it locks firmly.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it and let it dry completely before installing.
Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector straight onto the bulb until it clicks/locks by hand.
- Lightly tug to confirm it’s latched.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the other headlight using the same tools.
Step 8: Reinstall intake snorkel / washer neck
- Reposition the snorkel and reinstall the fastener using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension (snug only—do not overtighten into plastic).
- Reinstall the plastic clips using the trim clip removal tool to seat them fully.
- Return the washer filler neck to its original position and secure its clip.
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and verify both sides work on low beam and high beam.
- Check that the bulbs are seated: a loose bulb can cause a shaky beam or moisture entry.
- At night, confirm the beams look even. If one looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully locked.
