🔧 HR-V - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You can replace the left and right headlight bulbs from behind the headlight housings in the engine bay. The key is to confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam/DRL), then avoid touching the new bulb glass so it doesn’t burn out early.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool before touching anything; bulbs get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Never touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ If your HR-V has LED headlight modules (no replaceable bulb), stop and tell me what the bulb area looks like so I can guide the correct repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Dielectric grease applicator brush
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulbs - Common fitment: H11 - Qty: 2
- High beam/DRL bulbs - Common fitment: 9005 - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the light switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to identify the bulb you’re replacing: low beam is typically the larger rear cover near the projector lens; high beam/DRL is usually the other bulb socket.
- If you want maximum safety, disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam/DRL)
- Use a flashlight and look behind the headlight housing.
- Low beam is the main “night driving” beam; high beam is for bright/long distance and is also commonly used as the DRL on your HR-V.
- If unsure, tell me which side and which socket.
Step 2: Create working room (only if your hand access is tight)
- On the side that’s tight, remove the nearby plastic duct/cover fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and/or Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If there’s a small 10mm bolt holding a bracket/neck, remove it using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet, then move the part aside gently.
- Do not pull on wiring; move plastic parts only as needed.
Step 3: Unplug the bulb connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector locking tab and pull the connector straight back.
- If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently help lift the tab while pulling (do not pry hard).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)
- Still wearing nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb into the housing, aligning the tabs.
- Rotate clockwise until it locks fully in place.
- If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, clean it with bulb-safe cleaner and a lint-free wipe before installing.
Step 6: Reconnect and protect the connector
- Add a thin smear of dielectric grease to the inside lip of the connector using a dielectric grease applicator brush.
- Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same bulb on the opposite headlight so color and brightness match.
Step 8: Reinstall any parts you moved
- Reinstall any ducts/covers using the trim clip removal tool (to seat clips) and Phillips #2 screwdriver as needed.
- If you disconnected the battery, reinstall the negative terminal using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify the repaired side works.
- Test both low beams, then both high beams.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and re-check that the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully locked (clocked correctly).
- At night, verify the beam aim looks even left-to-right; if it’s wildly off, the bulb may not be seated.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depends on bulb type/brand)
You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
