🔧 Town & Country - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the headlight bulbs by accessing the back of each headlamp housing from under the hood, unplugging the old bulb, and installing the new one without touching the glass. This restores safe nighttime visibility and prevents one dim/burnt bulb from overworking the other side.
Assumption: “Headlight bulbs” = low-beam bulbs (most common). I’ll note the high-beam bulb option too.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (halogen bulbs get extremely hot).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb’s glass (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Make sure the van is in Park with the parking brake set.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but avoid working with the headlight switch on.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Trim clip tool
- Flathead screwdriver
- 8mm nut driver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulbs (H11) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulbs (9005) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Lay a towel over painted areas nearby.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the bulb access at the back of the headlamp
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight assembly from the engine bay.
- Identify the bulb socket you’re replacing (typically the low-beam socket is the larger/central one; high beam is usually a separate socket).
Step 2: Make working room (only if access is tight)
- If the driver side is tight, use a flathead screwdriver or trim clip tool to loosen/remove any intake snorkel clips.
- If you need to loosen an intake hose clamp, use an 8mm nut driver and move the duct slightly for hand clearance.
- If a small bracket blocks your hand, remove its bolts with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension, then set it aside.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb from the housing
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the electrical connector tab and pull the connector off the bulb (use a flathead screwdriver gently if the tab is stubborn).
- Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull the bulb straight out.
- If it won’t turn, re-grip and try again slowly.
Step 4: Install the new bulb correctly
- Without touching the glass, insert the new bulb into the opening in the same orientation as the old one.
- Turn the bulb clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place (hand-tight only).
- Push the electrical connector back on until it clicks.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps to replace the bulb on the other headlight.
- Keep the old bulbs as emergency spares if they still work.
Step 6: Reinstall anything you moved
- Reinstall any brackets using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension (snug only).
- Reattach intake ducting and tighten clamps with the 8mm nut driver (snug only).
- Reinstall any clips using the trim clip tool.
âś… After Repair
- Start the van and turn on the headlights to confirm both sides work on low beam.
- Switch to high beams to confirm high-beam operation if you replaced those bulbs.
- Walk around and check that both beams look even and bright.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, recheck the connector click.
