🔧 Escape - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Escape, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind the headlamp housings under the hood. You’ll remove the rear dust cover (a plastic cap that seals out moisture), twist the bulb out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool down first; they get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life); use nitrile gloves.
- ⚠️ Make sure the rear dust cover is fully seated to prevent moisture inside the headlamp.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep tools away from battery terminals.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4")
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- Trim clip removal tool
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Lay out the new bulbs and confirm you’re replacing the correct position (low beam vs high beam).
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the rear of each headlamp
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly and identify the bulb you’re replacing (low beam is typically the outer/rear area; high beam is typically more inboard).
- If your hands don’t fit on the passenger side, loosen the intake snorkel/duct clamps using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then move the duct slightly for access.
- If your hands don’t fit on the driver side, you may need to unbolt and shift a nearby cover/bracket using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Tip: Move parts gently—don’t force plastic.
Step 2: Remove the rear dust cover
- Grip the rear dust cover (plastic/rubber cap) and twist it counterclockwise by hand to remove it.
- If it’s stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to help break the seal at the edge (do not pry hard).
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab with your thumb (use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently help the tab).
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves and handle the new bulb by the base only.
- Align the bulb’s tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing, insert fully, then twist clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- If using dielectric grease (helps prevent corrosion), apply a tiny smear to the connector seal only (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the dust cover and restore any removed parts
- Reinstall the dust cover and twist clockwise until fully seated (this keeps water out).
- If you moved the intake duct or covers, reinstall them using the 8mm socket or 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
- If any plastic push-clips were removed, reinstall them using a trim clip removal tool to line them up without breaking them.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other headlight so both sides match in brightness and color.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and switch on low beams, then high beams, and confirm both sides work.
- Check that the dust covers are fully seated and no wiring is hanging near moving parts.
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even; if it’s clearly off, a bulb may not be fully locked.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depends on bulb type/brand)
