🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Tacoma, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind each headlamp in the engine bay. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb socket out, then install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes before touching.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves—skin oil on the glass can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass; hold it by the base only.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and use a small flashlight to locate the rear of each headlamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)
- Use a small flashlight and look behind the headlamp: you’ll see two round bulb bases.
- Low beam is the main headlight used at night; high beam is the brighter “brights” function.
- Tip: Replace left and right as a pair.
Step 2: Remove the electrical connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the lock tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb base (do not yank the wires).
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
- Use a small flashlight to make sure no rubber seal or O-ring stayed stuck in the headlamp.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)
- With nitrile gloves on, hold the new bulb by the plastic base only.
- Line up the bulb tabs with the headlamp housing slots, insert fully, then twist clockwise until it locks.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before installing.
Step 5: Reconnect and test
- Push the connector back on until it clicks.
- Turn the headlights on and confirm the side you replaced works.
- Repeat Steps 2-5 for the other headlight on the opposite side.
Step 6: Repeat for the other beam (if you’re doing both low and high)
- Follow the same process on the second bulb opening (low beam H11 and/or high beam 9005).
- Use a small flashlight to verify each bulb is fully seated and locked.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on low beams, then high beams, and verify both left and right work.
- Walk in front of the truck and confirm both beams look even in brightness and aim.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, re-check the connector is fully clicked in and the bulb is fully twisted/locked.
