š§ Outback - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Outback, the headlight bulbs are replaced from behind the headlamp housing under the hood. Youāll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb socket out, then install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get extremely hot).
- ā ļø Do not touch the new bulbās glass with bare fingers; skin oil shortens bulb life. If you touch it, clean with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free towel.
- ā ļø Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from the radiator fans.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the headlight switch OFF while working.

šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulbs youāre changing
- Use a small flashlight to look behind each headlamp and find the bulb location.
- Low beam is typically the easier āmainā bulb; high beam is a separate bulb in the same headlamp assembly.
Step 2: Make room to access the bulb (if needed)
- If your hands donāt fit, remove a nearby plastic pin/clip on the air snorkel/ducting using a trim clip removal tool.
- If a small screw is present on an intake duct cover, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Move the ducting aside gently (youāre just creating space, not fully removing the air box).
Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If itās tight, wiggle while pullingādonāt yank on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Hold the new bulb by the plastic base only (not the glass) with nitrile gloves.
- Align the tabs on the bulb with the slots in the headlamp housing.
- Insert the bulb fully, then rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it using rubbing alcohol (70%+) and a clean lint-free towel, then let it dry.
Step 6: Reconnect and reassemble
- Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until it clicks.
- Reinstall any ducting/clips you moved using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2-6 for the other headlight so brightness and color match.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and switch on low beams, then high beams, to confirm both sides work.
- Check that each bulb is fully locked (a loose bulb can aim wrong and flicker).
- If the beam aim looks off after replacement, tell me and Iāll walk you through headlight aiming on your Outback.
