🔧 Journey - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Journey, the headlight bulbs are serviceable without removing the whole headlamp, but access is tight. Most of the time, the easiest way is through the front wheel well to reach the back of the headlamp and swap the bulb(s).

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: your Journey uses halogen bulbs (most SE models do).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool fully before touching them (they get extremely hot).
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands before working in the wheel well.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm socket
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Work light
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (typically 9006 halogen) - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (typically 9005 halogen) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Turn headlights OFF and remove the key.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet to loosen the lug nuts about 1/2 turn (don’t remove them yet).

Step 2: Raise and support the front corner

  • Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) before working in the wheel well.

Step 3: Remove the front wheel

  • Remove the lug nuts using the 19mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.
  • Pull the wheel off and set it aside.

Step 4: Open the wheel well liner for access

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push-clips.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove any liner screws (some fasteners are screws instead of clips).
  • Peel the liner back enough to reach the rear of the headlamp.
  • Tip: Use a work light for visibility.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Locate the bulb socket at the back of the headlamp (you’ll feel a round plastic base with wiring).
  • Press the connector tab and unplug the wiring connector by hand.
  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise (about a 1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
  • Trim clip tool can help gently—don’t pry hard.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the headlamp opening (same orientation as the old one).
  • Twist clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
  • If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean and dry (use your gloves to avoid re-contaminating).

Step 7: Repeat for the other side (and for high/low beam if you’re replacing both)

  • Repeat Steps 1–6 on the other front wheel well to replace the opposite headlight bulb.
  • If you’re also replacing the high beam bulbs, repeat the same remove/twist/install process for the high beam socket.

Step 8: Reinstall the wheel well liner and wheel

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (to align and press them in).
  • Reinstall any screws using the Phillips screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.

Step 9: Lower the vehicle and torque lug nuts

  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum), remove the jack stands, and lower to the ground.
  • Use a torque wrench (30-200 ft-lbs range) with a 19mm socket to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights ON and verify: low beams, high beams, and turn signals all work.
  • Check that both sides match in brightness and color.
  • At night, confirm beam aim looks normal; if it seems off, have the headlight aim checked.
  • Keep the old working bulb as an emergency spare.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$300 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb type)

You Save: $120-$180 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
