šŸ”§ Jetta - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Jetta, the headlight bulbs are accessed from behind each headlight in the engine bay. The key is using the correct bulb type and not touching the new bulb’s glass (oil from skin can shorten bulb life).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let headlights cool 10-15 minutes before starting.
  • āš ļø Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs; use gloves.
  • āš ļø If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio/clock settings.
  • āš ļø Make sure the bulb is fully seated; a loose bulb can overheat the connector.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (H7, halogen) - Qty: 2
  • High beam/DRL bulb (H15, halogen) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the headlights OFF, and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to identify the rear covers on each headlight.
  • If your hands are tight in the space, you can disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet (optional).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing.
  • Low beam is typically the main dipped beam bulb (commonly H7).
  • High beam/DRL is the brighter/upper function bulb (commonly H15).
  • If only one is out, replace both sides.

Step 2: Remove the rear dust cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use your hands to twist/pull the rear dust cover off the back of the headlight.
  • If it’s stuck, gently help it with a plastic trim tool (do not pry hard).

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • Use your hand to pull the connector straight off the bulb base.
  • If there’s a locking tab, press it using a plastic trim tool, then pull.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • For an H7 low beam, the bulb is typically held by a spring clip or a twist-lock retainer.
  • Use your hand to release the clip (push in and swing away) or rotate the bulb/retainer counterclockwise to unlock.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the new bulb by the base only.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots, then seat it fully.
  • Lock it in place by re-engaging the spring clip or twisting clockwise until it stops.
  • If touched, clean glass with alcohol and lint-free cloth.

Step 6: Reconnect connector and reinstall the dust cover

  • Push the connector back on by hand until it clicks/seats firmly.
  • Reinstall the dust cover by hand and make sure it seals all the way around (keeps moisture out).

Step 7: Repeat on the other headlight

  • Use a flashlight to confirm you’re on the same bulb position on the opposite side.
  • Repeat Steps 2 through 6 for the other headlight.

Step 8: If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it

  • Install the negative terminal and tighten using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test: low beams, high beams, and DRLs.
  • Check that both beams look even against a wall; if one looks ā€œscattered,ā€ the bulb may not be seated.
  • Re-check the dust covers after a short drive to confirm they stayed fully seated.
