🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Wrangler, the headlight bulbs sit behind each headlight housing and twist-lock into place. Replacing both is straightforward, but you’ll want to avoid touching the new bulb’s glass to prevent early failure.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool for 10-15 minutes; bulbs get extremely hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Don’t force connectors; release the lock tab first to avoid breaking it.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts

- Headlight bulb (H13/9008) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Lay a clean shop towel nearby to set things on and to handle the new bulb if needed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight
- Open the hood and look behind the headlight housing on the side you’re replacing.
- Use a flashlight to clearly see the bulb base and electrical connector.
Step 2: Unplug the headlight connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If the tab is stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (don’t pry hard). Small moves prevent broken tabs.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb’s plastic base (not the glass).
- Twist the bulb base counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Handle the new H13/9008 bulb by the plastic base only.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean shop towel before installing.
- Line up the bulb tabs with the slots in the housing, insert the bulb fully, then twist clockwise to lock.
Step 5: Reconnect the wiring
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the inside edge of the connector seal.
- Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same steps to replace the bulb on the opposite headlight.
- Replace in pairs for matching brightness/color.
✅ After Repair
- Start the Wrangler and switch on low beams, then high beams, to confirm both work.
- Walk in front of the vehicle and verify both headlights look equally bright and aimed similarly.
- If one doesn’t light: turn lights off, re-check the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully twist-locked.
