Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, bulb types, access tips, and safety precautions for both sides for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021
🔧 Tundra - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the headlight bulbs by accessing the back of each headlamp housing from inside the engine bay. The key is to install the new bulbs without touching the glass so they last longer and don’t fail early.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: stock halogen headlamps (Low beam H11, High beam 9005).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool fully before touching the housings or bulbs.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep ignition OFF and headlight switch OFF while working.
- ⚠️ If you use a jack for any reason, support with jack stands (not required for this job).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flathead screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4")
- Flashlight
- Clean microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (9005) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and set a flashlight where it lights the back of the headlamp areas.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb is which (low vs high)
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp housing.
- The low beam (H11) and high beam (9005) are separate twist-lock bulbs with electrical connectors.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
Step 2: Replace the passenger-side low beam bulb (H11)
- Use a flashlight to locate the low-beam bulb at the rear of the passenger headlamp.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off (use your gloved hand; no tools if possible).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise (about 1/8–1/4 turn) and pull it straight out.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to handle the new bulb if needed; do not touch the glass.
- Install the new H11 bulb, align the tabs, and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal, then reconnect until it clicks.
Step 3: Replace the passenger-side high beam bulb (9005)
- Use a flashlight to locate the high-beam bulb on the passenger headlamp.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb, rotate clockwise to lock, then reconnect the plug until it clicks.
Step 4: Replace the driver-side low beam bulb (H11)
- Use a flashlight to locate the low-beam bulb on the driver-side headlamp.
- Disconnect the connector (press tab, pull straight off).
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise and remove it.
- Install the new H11 bulb (no glass touching), twist clockwise to lock, then reconnect the plug.
- Tip: If space is tight, work slowly by feel.
Step 5: Replace the driver-side high beam bulb (9005)
- Use a flashlight to find the high-beam bulb on the driver-side headlamp.
- Disconnect the connector, twist the bulb counterclockwise, and remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb, twist clockwise to lock, and reconnect until it clicks.
Step 6: If access is blocked, move the nearby tank slightly (only if needed)
- If your hands can’t reach a bulb, use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the single 10mm fastener holding the nearby reservoir bracket (typically washer fluid on passenger side).
- Gently shift the reservoir a little for clearance (do not disconnect hoses), then replace the bulb as above.
- Reinstall the fastener using the 10mm socket snugly (hand-tight; do not over-tighten plastic).
- If a plastic clip is in the way, gently lift the center pin with a small flathead screwdriver and remove the clip.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Tundra and test: low beams, high beams, and the high-beam indicator on the dash.
- Walk in front of the truck and confirm both sides match in color and brightness.
- Check that each bulb connector is fully seated and not loose.
- If the beam pattern looks “off,” inspect that the bulb is fully locked in place (misalignment is usually an unlocked bulb).
