🔧 Tucson - Taillight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both taillight bulbs on your Tucson is a simple beginner repair. The rear combination lamps are serviced from the back of the vehicle, and replacing both sides together keeps brightness even and helps avoid another bulb failure soon.

- ⚠️ Set the parking brake and keep your Tucson in Park.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground with the parking brake engaged.
- 💡 Switch all exterior lights off.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves. Gloves help keep oils from your skin off the bulbs.
- 🔎 Work on one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.
- 📌 A bulb socket is the plastic holder that twists into the taillight housing and holds the bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the liftgate
- Open the rear liftgate fully.
- Use a flashlight to look at the inner edge of the taillight assembly where it meets the liftgate opening.
- You will see the fasteners holding the outer taillight housing to the body.
Step 2: Remove the driver-side taillight fasteners
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the taillight retaining screws/bolts on the inner edge of the lamp.
- Set the screws/bolts aside in a safe place.
- These fasteners are small; reinstall later to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the driver-side taillight housing
- Use both hands to hold the taillight housing.
- Pull the housing straight rearward, not sideways.
- If it feels stuck, use a clean microfiber towel under your fingers for grip and gently wiggle it straight back.
- Do not pry hard with metal tools because the lens can crack.
- Pull straight back, slow and steady.
Step 4: Remove the driver-side bulb socket
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the needed bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
- If replacing all rear bulbs, remove one socket at a time so the positions do not get mixed up.
Step 5: Replace the driver-side bulb
- For a wedge-style bulb, use your gloved hand to pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- For a bayonet-style bulb, push the bulb inward slightly, rotate counterclockwise, then pull it out. A bayonet bulb has small side pins that lock into the socket.
- Install the matching new bulb into the socket by reversing the removal motion.
- Use a clean microfiber towel if you need extra grip.
Step 6: Reinstall the driver-side bulb socket
- Insert the bulb socket into the taillight housing.
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket clockwise until it locks.
- No torque wrench is used on bulb sockets. Hand-tight lock only.
Step 7: Test the driver-side bulb before reinstalling the housing
- Turn the light switch on to test the tail lamp.
- Press the brake pedal to test the stop lamp. Use a helper if available.
- Turn on the left turn signal to test the turn signal bulb.
- Shift briefly into Reverse with your foot firmly on the brake to test the backup bulb.
- Switch the lights off after testing.
- If a bulb does not work, remove it with your gloved hand, rotate it 180 degrees if it is a wedge bulb, and reinstall it.
Step 8: Reinstall the driver-side taillight housing
- Line up the guide pins on the taillight housing with the holes in the body.
- Push the housing straight forward until it seats flush.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the retaining screws/bolts.
- Tighten to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
Step 9: Remove the passenger-side taillight fasteners
- Move to the passenger side.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the taillight retaining screws/bolts.
- Set the fasteners aside safely.
Step 10: Remove the passenger-side taillight housing
- Use both hands to hold the taillight housing.
- Pull the housing straight rearward from the vehicle body.
- Use a clean microfiber towel for grip if needed.
- Do not twist the lamp housing sharply.
Step 11: Replace the passenger-side bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the needed bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket out of the housing.
- Remove the old bulb by pulling straight out or pushing in and turning counterclockwise, depending on bulb style.
- Install the matching new bulb into the socket.
- Insert the socket into the housing and rotate clockwise until locked.
Step 12: Test the passenger-side bulb before reinstalling
- Turn the light switch on to test the tail lamp.
- Press the brake pedal to test the stop lamp. Use a helper if available.
- Turn on the right turn signal to test the turn signal bulb.
- Shift briefly into Reverse with your foot firmly on the brake to test the backup bulb.
- Switch the lights off after testing.
Step 13: Reinstall the passenger-side taillight housing
- Line up the guide pins with the body holes.
- Push the housing straight forward until it sits flush with the body panel.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the retaining screws/bolts.
- Tighten to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
Step 14: Close the liftgate and perform a final light check
- Close the liftgate fully.
- Use the light switch to check both taillights.
- Press the brake pedal to check both brake lights.
- Use the turn signal stalk to check both rear turn signals.
- Shift briefly into Reverse with your foot on the brake to check both backup lights.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both taillight housings sit flush against the body.
- ✅ Make sure no warning lights appear on the dash.
- ✅ If one bulb does not work, recheck that the bulb is fully seated in the socket.
- ✅ Dispose of old bulbs carefully so the glass does not break.
