🔧 Highlander - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front windshield wiper blades on your Highlander is a simple beginner-friendly job. Worn blades can streak, chatter, or leave water behind, which reduces visibility in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the windshield. It can crack the glass.
  • ⚠️ Turn the wipers off before starting so they do not move unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 20" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground and turn the ignition fully off.
  • 🧼 Clean the lower windshield area with a clean microfiber towel so dirt does not scratch the glass.
  • 🛡️ Place the clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the wiper arm while you work. This protects the glass if the arm slips.
  • 📌 The front wipers use a hook-style wiper arm. The “hook” is the curved end of the metal wiper arm that locks into the blade.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Use your hands to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays upright.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the raised arm.
  • Keep one hand on the arm.

Step 2: Unlock the Old Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your fingers to press the small locking tab on the wiper blade adapter.
  • The locking tab is the small plastic release button where the blade connects to the metal arm.
  • Slide the old blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm to unhook it.

Step 3: Remove the Old Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your hands to rotate the old blade slightly so it clears the hook end of the arm.
  • Pull the blade completely off the wiper arm.
  • Carefully lower the bare wiper arm onto the microfiber towel if you need both hands.

Step 4: Install the New Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your hands to line up the new 26" blade with the hook end of the driver-side wiper arm.
  • Slide the new blade upward into the hook until it clicks into place.
  • Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
  • A click means it is seated.

Step 5: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Use your hands to carefully lower the driver-side wiper arm back onto the windshield.
  • Do not drop it. Guide it down slowly.

Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade

  • Use your hands to lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
  • Place the clean microfiber towel under the arm.
  • Press the locking tab with your fingers.
  • Slide the old blade downward to unhook it from the arm.
  • Remove the old blade by hand.
  • Install the new 20" blade by sliding it into the hook until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
  • Carefully lower the arm back onto the windshield.

Step 7: Test the New Wipers

  • Use the windshield washer switch to spray washer fluid onto the glass before testing.
  • Turn the front wipers on low speed and watch both blades sweep smoothly.
  • If a blade chatters or skips, stop the wipers and make sure the blade is fully clicked into the arm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both blades sit flat against the windshield.
  • ✅ Make sure the driver and passenger blades do not hit each other while moving.
  • ✅ Check for streaking with washer fluid. A little residue may clear after a few wipes.
  • ✅ Dispose of the old blades safely, especially if the rubber or metal edges are sharp.
