🔧 Front Windshield Wipers - Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick maintenance job that restores clear visibility in rain and spray. On your XC60, the blades use a quick-release connection, so the main job is setting the arms safely, swapping the blades, and confirming the new blades sit flat on the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Keep the wiper arms supported at all times. If an arm snaps back to the glass, it can crack the windshield.
  • Do not let the bare metal arm touch the glass while the blade is removed.
  • If the arms are parked low, move them to service position before lifting them.
  • Turn the ignition off before working near the wipers.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blade set - Driver and passenger side - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground with the ignition off and the parking brake set.
  • Make sure the windshield is clean so the new blades do not drag dirt across the glass.
  • If the wipers are hard to lift, place them in service position first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers in service position

  • If the arms are parked too close to the hood, use the wiper service position before lifting them. On many Volvos, this is done through the ignition and wiper stalk sequence.
  • Once the arms move up, gently lift one arm away from the windshield.
  • Work one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the old blade

  • Use your fingers to press the release tab at the wiper blade connector.
  • Slide the old blade down and off the arm.
  • Set the arm down carefully so it does not snap back against the glass.

Step 3: Install the new blade

  • Align the new blade connector with the wiper arm hook or adapter.
  • Slide it into place until it clicks securely.
  • Give it a light tug to confirm it is locked in.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the second front blade the same way.
  • Double-check that both blades are fully seated and facing the correct direction.

Step 5: Test the wipers

  • Lower both arms gently back onto the windshield.
  • Turn the ignition on and run the wipers with washer fluid.
  • Make sure both blades sweep smoothly and do not chatter or skip.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for streaks, skipping, or noise on both sides of the windshield.
  • If a blade does not sit flat, remove it and reinstall it until it clicks fully.
  • Wipe the windshield edge clean so the new rubber stays in good shape.
