🔧 Highlander - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front windshield wipers on your Highlander is a simple beginner-friendly job. The wiper blades clip onto the wiper arms, and replacing them helps restore clear visibility in rain, dust, and road spray.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- 🧤 Wear gloves if the old rubber is cracked or sharp at the edges.
- 🚗 Keep the ignition off so the wipers cannot move while your hands are near them.
🔧 Required Tools

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Highlander on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- 🧽 Clean the windshield with a clean microfiber towel so grit does not scratch the glass.
- 🧤 Put on mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- 📌 The front wipers use a J-hook style wiper arm. A J-hook is the curved hook at the end of the metal wiper arm that locks into the blade frame.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the Driver Side Wiper Arm
- Use your hands with mechanic gloves to gently lift the driver side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the wiper arm as a safety cushion.
- Hold the metal wiper arm with one hand the whole time.
- Never release the bare arm.
Step 2: Rotate the Old Driver Side Blade
- Use your hands to rotate the wiper blade so it forms a “T” shape with the wiper arm.
- Look for the small plastic locking tab where the blade connects to the J-hook.
- The locking tab is a small plastic latch that keeps the blade from sliding off the arm.
Step 3: Remove the Old Driver Side Blade
- Use your thumb to press the plastic locking tab inward.
- While holding the tab, slide the wiper blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm.
- Once it clears the hook, pull the blade away from the arm by hand.
- Keep control of the metal arm and rest it gently on the microfiber towel.
Step 4: Install the New Driver Side Blade
- Use your hands to line up the new 26" driver side wiper blade with the J-hook opening.
- Slide the blade upward into the hook until the latch clicks into place.
- Gently tug the blade by hand to make sure it is locked.
- No torque spec applies; this part locks by clip tension only.
- Listen for the click.
Step 5: Lower the Driver Side Wiper Arm
- Use both hands to gently lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Remove the microfiber towel once the blade is resting on the glass.
Step 6: Replace the Passenger Side Blade
- Use your hands with mechanic gloves to lift the passenger side wiper arm.
- Place the clean microfiber towel under the wiper arm.
- Rotate the old blade into a “T” shape.
- Press the plastic locking tab with your thumb.
- Slide the old blade downward and remove it from the J-hook.
- Install the new 20" passenger side wiper blade by sliding it upward into the hook until it clicks.
- Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Lower the wiper arm carefully onto the windshield.
Step 7: Test the Wipers
- Use the washer/wiper stalk on the steering column to spray washer fluid onto the windshield.
- Run the front wipers on low speed and check that both blades wipe smoothly.
- If a blade skips or chatters, use the clean microfiber towel to wipe the rubber edge and windshield again.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both blades are fully seated and do not slide off the wiper arms.
- 🌧️ Check for streaking, skipping, or missed areas on the windshield.
- 🧽 Clean the windshield regularly to help the new blades last longer.
- 📅 Replace wiper blades about every 6-12 months, or sooner if they streak, chatter, or tear.
