🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front windshield wipers on your Grand Cherokee is a quick beginner-friendly job. Fresh wiper blades help clear rain, dust, and road spray safely without streaking or skipping.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • ⚠️ Keep your fingers clear of the wiper arm hinge area while lifting or lowering the arm.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition fully off before starting so the wipers do not move unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 22", Passenger: 21" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and turn the ignition off.
  • 🧼 Clean loose dirt from the lower windshield with a clean microfiber towel.
  • 🧤 A wiper arm is the spring-loaded metal arm that holds the rubber blade against the glass.
  • 🛡️ Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under each wiper arm before removing the blade.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the Driver Wiper Arm

  • Use your hand to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays upright.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel and place it between the wiper arm area and the windshield for protection.
  • Do one side at a time.

Step 2: Find the Blade Release Tab

  • Look where the wiper blade connects to the hooked end of the wiper arm.
  • The release tab is a small plastic lock that keeps the blade attached to the arm.
  • Use your thumb to press the release tab. If it is stiff, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently.

Step 3: Remove the Old Driver Wiper Blade

  • While pressing the release tab, use your hand to slide the old blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm.
  • Continue sliding until the blade clears the J-hook end of the arm.
  • Carefully remove the old blade from the arm.
  • Do not release the bare arm onto the glass.

Step 4: Install the New Driver Wiper Blade

  • Use your hand to line up the new 22" driver-side wiper blade with the J-hook on the wiper arm.
  • Slide the new blade into the hook until you hear or feel a click.
  • Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked in place.
  • No torque spec applies because this blade clips on by hand.

Step 5: Lower the Driver Wiper Arm

  • Use your hand to slowly lower the driver-side wiper arm back onto the windshield.
  • Remove the clean microfiber towel after the blade is resting safely on the glass.
  • Lower it gently every time.

Step 6: Replace the Passenger Wiper Blade

  • Use your hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel under the arm to protect the glass.
  • Use your thumb or a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the release tab.
  • Slide the old blade off the J-hook by hand.
  • Install the new 21" passenger-side wiper blade by sliding it into the hook until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the blade by hand to make sure it is locked.
  • Use your hand to slowly lower the passenger-side arm onto the windshield.
  • No torque spec applies because this blade clips on by hand.

Step 7: Test the New Wipers

  • Use the windshield washer switch on the wiper stalk to spray washer fluid onto the glass.
  • Run the wipers on low speed for a few passes.
  • Check that both blades wipe smoothly without streaks, chatter, or lifting.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Make sure both blades sit flat against the windshield.
  • ✅ Confirm the driver blade does not hit the windshield trim or passenger blade.
  • ✅ If streaking remains, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a clean microfiber towel.
  • ✅ Replace wiper blades in pairs for even visibility in rain.
