How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2022 Subaru Forester
Step-by-step wiper service position instructions, tools/parts list, and safety tips

🔧 Forester - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades on your Forester is a quick job, but the key is getting the wiper arms into “service position” so you can safely lift them away from the hood.
Once the arms are up, you’ll release the blade from the arm, snap the new one on, and verify it’s locked.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Lift the wiper arms slowly; avoid scratching the hood edge.
- ⚠️ If you remove a blade, lay a folded towel on the windshield as protection.
- ⚠️ Ignition steps are needed to enter/exit wiper service position.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to P, and turn the steering wheel straight.
- Set the wiper switch to OFF.
- Have your new blades ready and confirm they match your old blades in length and connector style.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in service position
- Turn ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
- Turn ignition to OFF.
- Within about 10 seconds, move and hold the wiper stalk to the MIST (single-wipe) position for ~2 seconds.
- The wipers should stop raised up on the windshield (service position).
Step 2: Lift and protect the windshield
- Lift one wiper arm up carefully until it stays up.
- Place a microfiber towel on the windshield under the arm.
Step 3: Remove the old blade (Subaru-style top lock)
- Look at where the blade connects to the arm; you’ll see a small locking tab/button.
- Press the lock using your fingers or a small flat trim tool (plastic) (a trim tool is a plastic “pry tool” that won’t scratch paint).
- While holding the lock, slide the blade downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it, then pull it free.
- Keep one hand on the arm.
Step 4: Install the new blade and confirm it locks
- Align the new blade connector with the end of the wiper arm.
- Slide it into place until you hear/feel a solid click.
- Tug lightly on the blade to confirm it’s locked and won’t slide off.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Move the microfiber towel to the other side.
- Repeat removal/installation using the small flat trim tool (plastic) only if needed.
Step 6: Exit service position
- Lower both wiper arms gently onto the windshield.
- Turn ignition to ON.
- Tap the wiper stalk to MIST once to park the wipers normally.
âś… After Repair
- 🧪 Spray washer fluid and run wipers on LOW to verify smooth, quiet wiping.
- Check that both blades sit flat and don’t chatter or leave unwiped strips.
- If a blade streaks immediately, clean the windshield and blade edge with a towel and glass cleaner.
