How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2020 Mazda CX-5
Step-by-step wiper blade install with service position tips, blade sizes, tools, and safety precautions

🔧 CX-5 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll remove the old front wiper blade assemblies and snap new ones onto the wiper arms. On your CX-5, it’s best to put the wipers into “service position” first so you can safely lift the arms without them contacting the hood.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge while lifting the wiper arm.
- ⚠️ Do not let the wiper arm snap back onto the glass (it can crack the windshield).
- ⚠️ Put the wipers in service position before lifting the arms to avoid hood contact.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Clean shop towel
- Painter’s tape
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 24", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🧽 Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt off the windshield near the wipers.
- 🛡️ Place a shop towel on the glass where the wiper arm could drop, and use painter’s tape to hold it in place. Prevents a glass “chip” if it slips.
- 🧰 Set the wipers to service position so the arms can be lifted safely:
- Use the START/STOP button to switch ignition ON (do not start the engine), then switch it OFF.
- Within about 30 seconds, use the wiper stalk and push it up to MIST twice to move the wipers into the raised service position.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the wiper arms safely
- Use your hands (with nitrile gloves) to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Use a clean shop towel under the arm area as a cushion in case it drops.
Step 2: Remove the old driver-side blade
- Use your hands to rotate the blade so you can see the locking tab where the blade connects to the wiper arm (the “J-hook” style hook).
- Press the release tab on the blade with your thumb; if it’s stubborn, carefully press the tab using a small flat-blade screwdriver (a small straight screwdriver used to push a tab).
- Slide the blade down and off the hook with your hands.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade
- Use your hands to slide the new 24" blade onto the wiper arm hook until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug the blade with your hands to confirm it’s fully latched. If it doesn’t click, don’t force it.
Step 4: Repeat for the passenger-side blade
- Use your hands to lift the passenger-side wiper arm.
- Use your hands (or a small flat-blade screwdriver if needed) to press the release tab and slide the old blade off.
- Use your hands to install the new 18" blade until it clicks/locks.
Step 5: Lower the arms and exit service position
- Use your hands to lower each wiper arm gently back onto the windshield—do not let them snap down.
- Use the wiper stalk to turn the wipers on briefly, then off, so they park normally.
âś… After Repair
- 🧪 Use the wiper stalk to run the wipers on LOW speed and verify smooth wiping with no skipping.
- đź’§ Use the washer spray and confirm both blades clear water evenly.
- 🔍 Check that both blades are clipped in securely (no looseness at the arm connection).
