🔧 Escape - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll be removing the old front wiper blades from the arms and snapping new blades into place. This improves visibility in rain and prevents streaking or chatter on the windshield.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔹Keep the wiper arms from snapping back onto the glass; this can crack the windshield.
  • 🔹Turn the ignition off and make sure the wipers are not set to automatic (rain-sensing) mode.
  • 🔹Do not pull or twist on the wiper arms themselves; only handle the blades and small latches.
  • 🔹Work gently around the windshield to avoid scratching the glass or paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹Small flathead screwdriver (3-4 mm tip)
  • 🔹Shop towels or microfiber cloths
  • 🔹Step stool (if you need extra reach)
  • 🔹Safety glasses
  • 🔹Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Front wiper blade - driver side 26" - Qty: 1
  • 🔹Front wiper blade - passenger side 18" - Qty: 1
  • 🔹Windshield washer fluid (pre-mixed) - Qty: 1 jug

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔹Park your Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔹Turn the ignition off and make sure the wiper stalk is in the OFF position (no auto or intermittent setting).
  • 🔹Lift the wiper arms away from the windshield until they lock in the raised position.
  • 🔹Place a folded towel on the lower edge of the windshield in case a wiper arm falls.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arms safely

  • 🔹Stand at the front of your Escape and gently grab the base of the driver-side wiper arm.
  • 🔹Use your free hand to support the arm as you lift it away from the glass until it stays up on its own.
  • 🔹Repeat for the passenger-side wiper arm.
  • 🔹No torque spec required for this step; you are only moving the arms by hand.

Step 2: Locate the release tab on the old blade

  • 🔹On the driver-side blade, look where the blade attaches to the wiper arm; you’ll see a small plastic housing around the hook of the arm.
  • 🔹Find the small plastic tab or button on this housing; this is the release tab (a small clip that locks the blade on).
  • 🔹If the tab is hard to see, use the small flathead screwdriver to gently move surrounding plastic to get a better view.
  • 🔹No torque spec required; only light hand pressure is used.

Step 3: Release and slide off the old blade

  • 🔹Press the release tab with your fingers; if it’s stiff, lightly press it with the small flathead screwdriver.
  • 🔹While holding the tab in, slide the blade downward toward the base of the arm to unhook it from the arm’s “J” or hook-shaped end.
  • 🔹Once it unhooks, rotate the blade away from the arm and slide it off completely.
  • 🔹Carefully lower the bare wiper arm onto the towel on the windshield so it doesn’t snap against bare glass.
  • 🔹No torque spec required; only sliding and lifting by hand.
  • Keep a firm grip so the arm never springs back.

Step 4: Prepare the new driver-side blade

  • 🔹Take the new 26" wiper blade out of its package.
  • 🔹Most replacement blades come with several adapters; find the one that matches the hook-style arm on your Escape (usually pre-installed from the factory).
  • 🔹Check that the adapter opening looks like the one you just removed from the original blade.
  • 🔹No torque spec required for this preparation step.
  • Compare old and new blades to confirm match.

Step 5: Attach the new driver-side blade

  • 🔹Lift the driver-side wiper arm back off the towel and hold it firmly in one hand.
  • 🔹Rotate the new blade so the hook on the arm can slide into the opening on the adapter.
  • 🔹Slide the hook into the adapter and pull the blade upward (toward the top of the arm) until you hear or feel a “click” as the release tab locks.
  • 🔹Gently tug on the blade to make sure it is locked and does not slide off.
  • 🔹Carefully lower the arm with the new blade back onto the windshield.
  • 🔹No torque spec required; the lock is a snap-fit clip.
  • If no click, remove and try sliding again.

Step 6: Repeat removal and installation on passenger side

  • 🔹Lift the passenger-side arm from the glass and support it with one hand.
  • 🔹Use your fingers or the small flathead screwdriver to press the release tab on the old 18" blade, then slide it down off the hook as in Step 3.
  • 🔹Place the bare arm gently on the towel if needed.
  • 🔹Remove the new 18" wiper blade from its packaging and confirm it has the same type of adapter as the old one.
  • 🔹Lift the arm, slide the arm’s hook into the adapter opening, and pull the blade upward until it clicks and locks in place.
  • 🔹Lightly tug on the blade to confirm it is secure, then lower it carefully back onto the windshield.
  • 🔹No torque spec required; again, this is a snap-fit connection.

Step 7: Check blade alignment and clear the windshield

  • 🔹Visually check that both blades sit flat on the glass and are not twisted.
  • 🔹Make sure the plastic frames do not touch the windshield trim or the edge of the hood.
  • 🔹Use a shop towel or microfiber cloth to wipe any fingerprints or dirt from the new rubber edges.
  • 🔹No torque spec required for cleaning and checking alignment.

Step 8: Test the new wiper blades

  • 🔹Remove the towel from the base of the windshield.
  • 🔹Sit in the driver’s seat, turn the ignition on, and briefly run the wipers with the washer fluid (pull the wiper stalk to spray).
  • 🔹Watch for smooth, quiet motion and full coverage with no streaks or skipping.
  • 🔹Turn the wipers off and return them to the parked position before shutting the ignition off.
  • 🔹No torque spec required; this is only an operational test.
  • Light streaks may improve after a few wipes.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔹Confirm both blades are tight and do not slide or wobble when you lift and lower them by hand.
  • 🔹Top off windshield washer fluid if it’s low, following the cap under the hood.
  • 🔹Check that the wipers park correctly and don’t hit the A-pillars or hood.
  • 🔹Re-check operation during the next rain; if there’s heavy streaking, make sure the blades are correctly locked and not reversed in position.
