🔧 Traverse - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old front wiper blades from the wiper arms and snap on new blades. Worn blades streak, chatter, and can scratch the windshield, so replacing them restores clear visibility in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Keep the wiper arm from snapping onto the glass—always hold it when the blade is off.
  • 🛑 Work with the ignition OFF and wipers OFF.
  • 🛑 Put a towel on the windshield as backup protection.
  • 🛑 Do not force plastic release tabs; they can break in cold weather.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Microfiber towel
  • Painter’s tape
  • Step stool
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Match lengths to your existing blades (common Traverse lengths: Driver 26", Passenger 18") - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Traverse on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lay a microfiber towel across the lower windshield area.
  • Optional: Put a small strip of painter’s tape where the wiper might touch, as extra protection.
  • Tip: Read the length printed on old blades.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arms safely

  • Use a step stool if needed so you don’t pull sideways on the arm.
  • Lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it holds itself up.
  • Keep the microfiber towel on the glass under the arm.

Step 2: Identify your blade attachment style

  • Look where the blade connects to the wiper arm (the “adapter” is the plastic connector piece).
  • If you see a curved hook shape, follow Option A (J-hook).
  • If you see a wide plastic connector with a button/tab on top or sides, follow Option B (push-button / pinch-tab).

Step 3A: Remove the old blade (Option A: J-hook)

  • Rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
  • Press the small release tab on the adapter (use a small flathead screwdriver only if your fingers can’t press it).
  • Slide the blade down toward the base of the hook, then unhook it and remove.

Step 3B: Remove the old blade (Option B: push-button / pinch-tab)

  • Find the release (a button on top or tabs on the sides).
  • Press the release with your fingers (or gently with a small flathead screwdriver if needed).
  • While holding the release, slide the blade straight out of the arm connector and remove it.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one for the same length before installing.
  • Attach the new blade to the arm using the same connection style you removed.
  • Pull gently on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place (you should hear/feel a click).
  • Tip: Don’t touch the rubber wiping edge.

Step 5: Lower the arm carefully

  • Hold the arm and slowly lower the blade onto the windshield.
  • Remove the microfiber towel and any painter’s tape.

Step 6: Repeat for the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the passenger-side blade.

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Traverse and run the front washers and wipers for 10–15 seconds.
  • Check for streaking, skipping, or one side not contacting the glass.
  • If the blade chatters, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
