How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox
Step-by-step DIY wiper blade change with tools, parts list, safety tips, and testing checklist

🔧 Equinox - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll be removing the old front wiper blades from your Equinox and snapping new ones onto the wiper arms. This restores clear visibility and prevents streaking or scratching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Do not turn the ignition or wipers on while working on the blades.
- 🛑 Always lower the bare wiper arm gently; if it snaps against the glass, it can crack the windshield.
- 🛑 Work on a flat surface with the vehicle in Park and parking brake set.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🧰 Small flathead screwdriver (4-6 mm tip)
- 🧰 Clean microfiber towel
- 🧰 Step stool (if needed to comfortably reach windshield)
- 🧰 Safety glasses
- 🧰 Mechanic gloves

📋 Before You Begin
- 🧭 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧭 Turn the ignition off and make sure the wipers are in their normal resting position at the bottom of the windshield.
- 🧭 Open the new blades and verify lengths: 24" for driver side, 18" for passenger side. Match sizes before removing old blades
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- 🪛 Stand on the driver side and gently lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it holds itself up.
- Use the clean microfiber towel and place it on the glass under the wiper area. This protects the windshield if the arm snaps down.
- Always control the metal arm with one hand
Step 2: Locate the release tab on the old blade
- 🪛 Look where the wiper blade meets the hook-shaped metal arm. You’ll see a small plastic latch or tab.
- Use the small flathead screwdriver to gently lift or press the plastic tab (depends on blade style) while supporting the blade with your other hand.
- Do not twist the screwdriver hard; plastic can crack
Step 3: Slide the old blade off the arm
- 🪛 While holding the tab released, slide the wiper blade downward toward the open end of the hook until it comes free from the arm.
- Carefully remove the blade from the arm and set it aside.
- Gently lower the bare arm onto the microfiber towel on the glass so it does not hit the windshield.
Step 4: Prepare the new driver-side blade
- 🪛 Take the new 24" blade out of its package.
- If it came with several plastic adapters, choose the one labeled for a “J-hook” or hook-style arm (this is the common arm type on your Equinox).
- Clip the adapter onto the new blade following the small diagram on the package. Push until you hear a click
Step 5: Install the new driver-side blade
- 🪛 Lift the wiper arm off the glass again and hold it firmly.
- Turn the new blade so the adapter opening lines up with the hook of the arm.
- Slide the hook through the opening in the adapter and pull the blade upward into the hook until it clicks into place.
- Lightly tug the blade with your hand to confirm it is locked on and does not slide off.
- Lower the arm and new blade gently back onto the windshield, removing the microfiber towel first.
Step 6: Repeat removal on the passenger-side blade
- 🪛 Move to the passenger side and lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it holds itself up.
- Place the microfiber towel on the glass under the wiper arm.
- Use the small flathead screwdriver to release the tab on the old 18" blade, then slide it down and off the hook like you did on the driver side.
- Lower the bare arm gently back toward the towel if needed while you get the new blade ready.
Step 7: Install the new passenger-side blade
- 🪛 Take the new 18" blade and attach the same style J-hook adapter if it is not already installed.
- Lift the wiper arm again and slide the hook through the adapter opening.
- Pull the blade upward into the hook until you hear or feel it click.
- Lightly tug the blade to make sure it is firmly locked.
- Lower the arm and blade gently onto the windshield, then remove the microfiber towel.
Step 8: Clean the windshield and check blade alignment
- 🪛 Spray the glass with glass cleaner spray and wipe with the clean microfiber towel to remove dirt and leftover rubber.
- Look at the new blades from outside: they should sit flat on the glass and be parallel to the bottom of the windshield.
- Re-seat any blade that looks twisted or crooked
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Start the engine and spray washer fluid, then run the wipers on low speed. Watch both blades to confirm smooth, quiet movement and full contact with the glass.
- 🧪 Check for streaks or missed spots. If you see any, wipe the new rubber edges with the clean microfiber towel and cleaner, then test again.
- 🧪 Make sure no warning lights appear and both wipers park correctly at the bottom of the windshield.
