How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta
Step-by-step guide to using wiper service position, choosing correct blades, and safe installation tips

🔧 Jetta - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility and prevents streaking or scratching the glass. On your Jetta, you’ll also put the wiper arms into “service position” so you can lift them safely without hitting the hood.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before handling the wipers.
- ⚠️ Put the wipers in service position before lifting the arms so they don’t contact the hood edge.
- ⚠️ Never let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge area when lowering the arm.
- Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves

- Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the wipers are turned OFF.
- Have your new blades ready and unopened so you can match the connector style.
- If your new blades don’t list your Jetta on the package, use the blade length printed on the old blade (or measure it) to confirm you bought the correct sizes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers into service position
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Turn the ignition ON, then turn it OFF.
- Within about 10 seconds, press the wiper stalk down once (the “single wipe” position).
- The wiper arms should move up the windshield and stop in a raised “service position.”
- If they don’t move, repeat the ON/OFF sequence.
Step 2: Protect the windshield
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the lower windshield where the wiper arm could touch.
- Optionally add painter’s tape to hold the towel in place.
Step 3: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Use your hands (with nitrile gloves) to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up.
- Keep the clean microfiber towel in place under the arm as a safety buffer.
Step 4: Remove the old blade from the driver-side arm
- Use your hands to rotate the blade so you can see the connector where the blade attaches to the arm.
- Press the small release tab on the connector (you’ll feel it “click”).
- While holding the tab, slide the blade off the end of the arm.
- Don’t twist hard—steady pressure works best.
Step 5: Install the new driver-side blade
- Use your hands to slide the new blade onto the arm until it locks.
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s fully latched (it should not slide off).
Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side
- Use your hands (with nitrile gloves) to lift the passenger-side arm.
- Use your hands to press the release tab and slide the old blade off.
- Use your hands to slide the new blade on until it clicks/locks.
Step 7: Lower the wiper arms carefully
- Use your hands to lower each arm back onto the windshield gently.
- Remove the clean microfiber towel and any painter’s tape.
Step 8: Exit service position
- Turn the ignition ON.
- Use the wiper stalk to run a normal wipe cycle, or turn the ignition OFF and they should return to their parked position.
âś… After Repair
- Test with washer fluid: run the front washers and wipers and confirm smooth, quiet wiping.
- If you see streaks, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a clean microfiber towel, then retest.
- If a blade chatters, it may not be fully latched—recheck the connector click and tug-test again.
