How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2019 Toyota Highlander
Step-by-step guide to using service position, removing old blades, installing new ones, and safety tips

🔧 Highlander - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll put your wipers into “service position” so the arms can lift safely, then remove the old blades and click the new ones on. This matters because the wipers on your Highlander park low and can hit the hood edge if you lift them normally.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before lifting the wiper arms so they can’t move unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Put a towel on the windshield under the arm while working.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic’s gloves
- Microfiber towel
- Painter’s tape
- Small flat trim tool

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground and shift to Park.
- Have the new blades ready and keep the boxes (helpful if you need to exchange sizes).
- Put the wipers in “service position” (this is a special parked-up position so the arms can be lifted safely).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers into service position
- Use the key fob and start button to turn ignition ON, then turn it OFF.
- Within a few seconds, use the wiper stalk and push it to the MIST (up) position and hold it for about 2 seconds.
- Confirm both front wipers move up into the “maintenance/service” position.
Step 2: Protect the windshield and lift one wiper arm
- Use a microfiber towel to lay a pad on the windshield under the wiper you’re working on.
- Use mechanic’s gloves to lift the wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up.
- Use painter’s tape to lightly mark the blade’s parked position on the glass if you want a quick reference.
Step 3: Identify the blade connector type (so you remove it the right way)
- Use safety glasses and look where the blade meets the arm.
- If the end of the arm looks like a curved “question mark,” that’s a J-hook (a hook-shaped arm end).
- If it looks like a straight arm that slides into a boxy clip with a squeeze tab, that’s a pinch-tab/top-lock style.
Step 4: Remove the old blade
- If it’s a J-hook type: use your gloved hands to rotate the blade perpendicular to the arm, press the small release tab, then slide the blade down and off the hook.
- If it’s a pinch-tab/top-lock type: use your gloved hands to press the side tabs (or top tab), then slide the blade straight off the arm.
- If a tab is stubborn, use the small flat trim tool to gently press the release tab (don’t pry hard).
Step 5: Install the new blade
- Use your gloved hands to slide the new blade onto the arm in the same orientation the old one came off.
- Push until you feel/hear a solid click.
- Gently tug on the blade with your gloved hands to confirm it’s locked. Don’t skip the tug test.
Step 6: Lower the arm carefully and repeat for the other side
- Use your gloved hands to lower the wiper arm back onto the towel, then remove the towel.
- Repeat Steps 2–5 on the other front wiper.
Step 7: Exit service position
- Use the start button to turn ignition ON.
- Use the wiper stalk to run the wipers once, then turn them OFF so they park normally.
âś… After Repair
- Fill washer fluid if needed, then run washers and wipers to confirm smooth, quiet wiping.
- Check that both blades wipe the full area and don’t chatter. Chatter can mean wrong adapter or not clicked in.
- Verify the arms park correctly at the bottom of the windshield.
