šŸ”§ CX-5 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades on your CX-5 is a quick job, but you must put the wipers into the ā€œservice positionā€ so you can safely lift the arms. The key is to avoid letting the bare wiper arm snap back onto the glass, which can crack the windshield.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Keep a firm grip on the wiper arm—don’t let it spring back onto the windshield.
  • āš ļø Put a folded towel on the glass under the arm while swapping blades.
  • āš ļø Do not force the arm up if it’s not in service position.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Clean towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Step stool

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 24", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Have your new blades unboxed and ready (makes the arms stay up for less time).
  • Move the wipers into service position (so the arms can lift safely):
  • Ignition ON (do not start) → Ignition OFF → within 30 seconds, move the wiper stalk to MIST (one quick up-wipe) two times. The wipers should park partway up the windshield.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm service position

  • Verify the blades are stopped partway up the glass (service position).
  • If they are still down at the cowl, repeat: use the wiper stalk to MIST two times after switching ignition OFF.

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Use mechanic gloves and lift the arm away from the windshield until it holds itself up.
  • Place a clean towel under the arm on the glass as a cushion.

Step 3: Remove the old blade (use the connector style you have)

  • Look where the blade attaches to the arm.
  • If you see a push-button: press the button using your thumb (or a small flathead screwdriver gently), then slide the blade straight off the arm.
  • If you see a hook (J-hook): rotate the blade perpendicular to the arm, press the small locking tab with a small flathead screwdriver, then slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it.
  • Don’t pry hard—tabs break easily.

Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Match the new blade to the old one (length and connector).
  • Slide the new blade onto the arm until it clicks or locks.
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s latched.

Step 5: Lower the driver-side arm carefully

  • Hold the arm firmly and lower it onto the windshield slowly.
  • Remove the clean towel.

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger-side

  • Use the same process: lift arm, protect glass with a clean towel, remove blade, click in the new one, lower the arm slowly.
  • Use a step stool if reaching feels awkward.

Step 7: Exit service position

  • Turn ignition ON.
  • Use the wiper stalk for one normal wipe, or turn wipers ON then OFF, to let them return to their normal parked position.

āœ… After Repair

  • Spray washer fluid and run the wipers on low to confirm smooth wiping and no skipping.
  • Check that both blades are fully seated and not crooked.
  • If you hear clacking, stop and re-check the connector lock.
