🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll be removing the old front wiper blades from the arms and snapping new ones into place on your Grand Cherokee. This improves visibility and reduces streaking or chattering in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Always switch the ignition off and remove the key before working on the wipers.
  • 🔸Lift only one wiper arm at a time to avoid arms snapping back onto the glass.
  • 🔸Do not let the bare metal wiper arm fall against the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • 🔸If your wipers are iced to the glass, fully thaw them before replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔸Small flathead screwdriver (3-4 mm tip)
  • 🔸Clean microfiber cloth
  • 🔸Step stool (if you need extra reach)
  • 🔸Mechanic gloves
  • 🔸Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔸Front wiper blade - Driver side 22" - Qty: 1
  • 🔸Front wiper blade - Passenger side 21" - Qty: 1
  • 🔸Windshield washer fluid (premixed) - Qty: 1 jug
  • 🔸Glass cleaner spray - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Grand Cherokee on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or switch off the start/stop button.
  • Make sure wiper arms are in their normal “down” position at the base of the windshield.
  • Have the new blades unboxed and ready; identify which is driver (22") and passenger (21").

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Prepare the windshield and wiper arms

  • Use the glass cleaner spray and a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the lower area of the windshield where the wipers rest.
  • This removes grit so you don’t scratch the glass while working.
  • Clean glass helps new blades work better

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Stand on the driver side; use the step stool if you need better reach.
  • With one hand on the base of the arm, gently pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in an upright position.
  • Support the arm with one hand at all times so it does not spring back.

Step 3: Locate the release tab on the wiper blade

  • Your Grand Cherokee uses a pinch-tab style blade connection (a small plastic tab you press to release the blade).
  • Look near the center of the blade where it connects to the metal arm; you’ll see a plastic housing with a small tab or button.
  • If needed, use the small flathead screwdriver to gently move any cover and see the tab more clearly.

Step 4: Release and remove the old driver-side blade

  • With one hand, hold the wiper arm steady.
  • With the other hand, press the plastic release tab using your fingers or the small flathead screwdriver tip.
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade assembly downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it from the arm.
  • Once it comes free, carefully slide the blade off the hook and remove it completely.
  • Gently lower the bare arm onto a clean microfiber cloth resting on the glass, or keep holding it. Never drop bare arm on glass

Step 5: Attach the new driver-side blade

  • Confirm you have the 22" driver-side blade in your hand.
  • Most replacement blades come with several adapters; choose the one labeled for “pinch tab” or “Jeep/Chrysler” and install it per the blade’s small instructions.
  • Lift the wiper arm back up away from the glass and hold it firmly.
  • Align the hook or pin on the arm with the opening in the new blade’s adapter.
  • Slide the blade onto the arm until you hear or feel a click.
  • Gently tug the blade with your hand to confirm it is locked in place.

Step 6: Lower the driver-side arm

  • With one hand guiding the new blade, slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
  • Do not let it snap down; set it down softly.

Step 7: Repeat removal on the passenger-side blade

  • Move to the passenger side and lift the passenger wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the service position.
  • Support the arm with one hand.
  • Locate the plastic release tab at the blade’s connection point, as in Step 3.
  • Press the tab with your fingers or the small flathead screwdriver and slide the blade downward to unhook it.
  • Remove the old passenger blade and rest or support the bare arm carefully.

Step 8: Install the new passenger-side blade

  • Make sure you’re using the 21" passenger-side blade.
  • Install the correct adapter on the new blade if required, matching what you used on the driver side.
  • Lift the passenger wiper arm and align the adapter opening with the arm’s hook or pin.
  • Slide the blade into place until it clicks and locks.
  • Gently tug to verify it is fully seated.
  • Slowly lower the arm and blade onto the windshield.

Step 9: Final check and clean-up

  • Use the glass cleaner spray and clean microfiber cloth to wipe the new blades’ rubber edges lightly and the area of the windshield they sweep.
  • Light cleaning removes factory residue
  • Make sure both blades rest flat on the glass and are parallel with the bottom edge of the windshield.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on (engine can stay off) and spray the washer fluid to test both front wipers.
  • Watch for smooth motion, no skipping, and good contact across the entire sweep.
  • Top up the windshield washer fluid if needed.
  • If you hear any knocking or see loose movement, switch off the wipers and re-check that each blade is fully clicked into its adapter.
