🔧 Insight - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll be removing the old front wiper blade inserts (the rubber blades in the plastic frame) and snapping on new blades. Fresh blades improve visibility and reduce streaking and chatter, especially in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF before working near the wipers.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Support the wiper arm with a towel when the blade is off.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge points while lifting the arms.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 16" - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Insight on level ground and make sure the wipers are OFF.
  • If your wipers are partially tucked under the hood edge, use one of the “service position” methods below so the arms can lift safely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers in a lift-friendly position

  • Option A (if the arms lift normally): Skip to Step 2.
  • Option B (service/maintenance position): Use the following sequence so the wipers park upright.
  • Press the brake and use the push-button start to turn the car ON (do not start driving).
  • Press the push-button start again to turn the car OFF.
  • Within about 30 seconds, move and hold the wiper stalk to MIST for a couple seconds until the wipers move up and stop where you can lift them.
  • If it doesn’t work, retry the ON-OFF sequence.

Step 2: Lift and protect the wiper arm

  • Lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the glass under the arm, so if it slips it won’t hit the windshield directly.

Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade

  • Find the small locking tab where the blade connects to the arm (near the middle of the blade).
  • Press the tab by hand; if it’s stubborn, gently help it with a small flat trim tool. (A trim tool is a small plastic/flat prying tool that helps press tabs without damaging parts.)
  • While the tab is pressed, slide the blade down and off the arm hook.

Step 4: Install the new wiper blade

  • Confirm you’re installing the correct length for that side (driver vs passenger).
  • Align the new blade’s connector with the arm hook.
  • Slide it into place until you hear/feel a click.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 5: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 2–4 for the passenger-side blade using the clean microfiber towel again.

Step 6: Return wipers to normal parked position

  • Lower both arms carefully back onto the windshield.
  • If you used the service/maintenance position, turn the car ON and cycle the wipers once using the stalk so they return to normal park.

âś… After Repair

  • Test the wipers on LOW speed and verify both wipe cleanly with no skipping.
  • Test the washer spray and verify there are no streaks.
  • If you get chatter, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a clean microfiber towel.
