How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500
Step-by-step DIY wiper blade change with tools, parts list, safety tips, and testing instructions

🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll remove the old front wiper blades from your Sierra 1500 and snap new blades onto the wiper arms. This restores clear vision in rain and prevents streaking or chattering.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key so the wipers cannot move unexpectedly.
- 🛑 Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- 🛑 Work on level ground where you can reach the windshield comfortably without over-stretching.
- 🛑 If the windshield is dirty or sandy, rinse it first to avoid scratching when testing.

- 🧩 Front wiper blade - Passenger side 22" - Qty: 1
- 🧴 Washer fluid (all-season) - Qty: 1 jug
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚘 Park the Sierra on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
- 🪟 Make sure the wiper switch is in the OFF position.
- 🧽 Clean the windshield lightly with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel so you can check the new blades properly.
- 📦 Unbox the new wiper blades and identify which blade is for the driver side and which is for the passenger side if they are labeled.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Prepare the driver-side wiper arm
- Wear your safety glasses and gloves.
- Gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stands up on its own.
- Place a folded microfiber towel on the glass under the wiper area. Protects glass if arm drops
Step 2: Find the release tab on the old blade
- Stand beside the truck so you can see the connection where the blade meets the wiper arm.
- On your Sierra, the arm uses a hook-style connection with a small plastic latch on the blade.
- With your gloves on, feel underneath or at the side of the connection for a small plastic tab or button.
Step 3: Remove the old driver-side blade
- Press and hold the plastic release tab with your thumb or finger.
- While holding the tab, slide the blade downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it from the arm.
- Once it is free of the hook, rotate the blade away from the arm and remove it completely.
- Carefully lower the bare metal wiper arm back onto the microfiber towel so it rests gently on the glass. Never let it snap down
Step 4: Attach the new driver-side blade
- Lift the driver-side wiper arm back up from the towel so it is off the glass again.
- Hold the new 22" driver-side blade so the adapter (plastic connector) lines up with the hook on the wiper arm.
- Slide the arm’s hook into the opening on the blade adapter, then pull the blade upward until it clicks and locks into place.
- Gently tug on the blade with your hand to confirm it is fully locked and does not slide out.
- Lower the wiper arm with the new blade slowly back onto the windshield.
Step 5: Replace the passenger-side blade
- Repeat the same process on the passenger side: lift the wiper arm, place a microfiber towel on the glass, and locate the release tab on the blade.
- Press the tab, slide the old blade downward off the hook, rotate and remove it.
- Lift the arm again, align the new 22" passenger blade’s adapter with the arm hook.
- Slide the blade into the hook and pull it upward until it clicks into place.
- Gently tug to confirm the passenger blade is locked, then lower it slowly to the glass.
Step 6: Clean and test the new wipers
- Use your glass cleaner spray bottle and microfiber towel to clean the windshield one more time.
- Make sure both wiper arms are resting normally on the glass.
- Start the engine and operate the washer function so fluid sprays on the windshield.
- Run the wipers on low and then high speed. Watch for smooth, quiet movement and no streaks or missed areas.
- If any blade is noisy or not wiping evenly, turn the wipers off and reseat that blade by removing and reinstalling it firmly until it clicks.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Confirm the wipers clear the windshield fully with both washer fluid and light hose water if available.
- 🔊 Listen for any chatter or skipping; if present, clean the rubber edges with a damp microfiber towel.
- 📆 Make a note of the replacement date; wiper blades typically last about 6–12 months depending on sun and dust exposure.
- 🧴 Top off washer fluid so the system is ready for bad weather.
