How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2019 Ford Escape
Step-by-step DIY wiper blade replacement with tools, parts, safety tips, and cost savings

🔧 Escape - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You'll remove the old front wiper blades from your Escape and snap new ones onto the wiper arms. This restores clear vision in rain and prevents scratching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Keep the ignition off so the wipers do not move while you work.
- 🛑 Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- 🛑 Work in a safe, flat area with the vehicle in Park and parking brake set.
- 🛑 If the windshield is very dirty, rinse it first so grit does not scratch the glass.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 📝 Park your Escape on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
- 📝 Make sure the wiper arms are in their normal “parked” position at the bottom of the windshield.
- 📝 Put on work gloves so you can grip the wiper arms and blades firmly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- đź› Put on your work gloves.
- đź› Stand on the driver side and gently pull the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the raised position.
- đź› Support the arm with one hand so it does not spring back.
- Always keep one hand on the arm
Step 2: Find the release tab on the wiper blade
- 🛠Look where the blade connects to the metal arm; this is called the “wiper hook” connection.
- 🛠You’ll see a small plastic tab or button on the blade’s adapter near the hook.
- đź› If it is hard to see, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently move nearby plastic pieces so you can view the tab clearly.
Step 3: Release and slide off the old driver-side blade
- đź› With one hand, press and hold the plastic release tab using your thumb or the small flathead screwdriver.
- đź› While holding the tab, slide the wiper blade downward, toward the base of the arm, so it comes out of the hook.
- đź› Rotate the blade away from the arm and remove it completely, still keeping a hand on the metal arm.
- 🛠Carefully lower the bare arm onto a soft spot on the windshield or gently lay it on a folded towel if you’re more comfortable that way.
- Never let the bare arm snap onto glass
Step 4: Prepare the new driver-side blade
- đź› Take the new 28" driver-side blade out of its packaging.
- đź› Most replacement blades come with several adapters; check the instructions in the package for the J-hook or hook-style adapter, which is what your Escape uses.
- đź› Make sure the adapter is firmly snapped onto the blade before installing.
Step 5: Install the new driver-side blade
- đź› Lift the wiper arm back off the glass with your work gloves on.
- đź› Turn the new blade so the adapter opening faces the hook on the arm.
- 🛠Slide the hook of the arm into the adapter opening and pull the blade upward until you hear or feel a “click.”
- đź› Gently tug the blade to confirm it is fully locked in place.
- đź› Slowly lower the arm and new blade back onto the windshield.
- If it doesn’t click, remove and try again
Step 6: Repeat removal on the passenger-side blade
- đź› Move to the passenger side and lift the wiper arm off the glass until it locks in the raised position.
- 🛠Find the same type of release tab on the old blade’s adapter where it connects to the arm.
- đź› Press the tab with your fingers or the small flathead screwdriver, slide the blade downward out of the hook, then rotate and remove it.
- đź› Carefully lower the bare passenger arm onto the windshield or onto a folded towel.
Step 7: Install the new passenger-side blade
- đź› Take the new 28" passenger-side blade and confirm the correct J-hook adapter is installed, as you did on the driver side.
- đź› Lift the passenger wiper arm again and align the hook with the adapter opening.
- đź› Slide the hook into the adapter and pull the blade upward until it clicks and locks.
- đź› Gently tug to ensure it is secure, then lower the arm and blade onto the windshield.
Step 8: Check blade alignment and clear any packaging
- đź› Make sure both blades rest flat on the glass and are not twisted.
- đź› Remove any protective covers or plastic sleeves from the new rubber blade edges.
- Leftover plastic will cause streaking
âś… After Repair
- 🧪 Turn the ignition on, spray washer fluid, and run the wipers on low speed.
- 🧪 Watch the blades move: they should wipe smoothly with no skipping or loud chatter.
- 🧪 Check that the blades do not hit the windshield trim or each other.
- 🧪 Top off the windscreen washer fluid if needed so your new blades stay effective.
