🔧 XT4 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear vision in rain and reduces streaking and chatter. On your XT4, the job is quick, but you want to protect the windshield from the spring-loaded wiper arms.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep a firm grip on the wiper arm—if it snaps down, it can crack the windshield.
- ⚠️ Do not run the wipers with no blades installed.
- ⚠️ If the wiper arm won’t lift freely, don’t force it—use the wiper “service position” steps below.
- Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Microfiber towel

- Front wiper blades - Match the length of the blades currently installed - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower edge of the windshield as a safety cushion.
- If the wiper arms hit the hood and won’t lift, use this common GM “service position” attempt: turn ignition ON, then OFF, then immediately move/hold the wiper stalk to a single-wipe (mist) position for 2–3 seconds to park the wipers higher. If it doesn’t work on your XT4, skip it and continue with the hood open.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the wiper arm safely
- Open the hood if needed for clearance.
- Lift one wiper arm up off the glass until it stays up on its own.
- Slide the microfiber towel (hand tool) under the arm’s contact area as protection.
Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade
- Find the connector where the blade attaches to the arm (usually a “J-hook” or push-button style).
- If there’s a small locking tab, press it with your thumb; if it’s stiff, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently to depress the tab.
- Slide the blade down and off the end of the wiper arm.
- Don’t let the bare arm touch glass.
Step 3: Install the new wiper blade
- Confirm the new blade matches the old blade length before installing.
- Slide the new blade onto the wiper arm connector until you hear/feel a click.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 4: Lower the wiper arm carefully
- Hold the arm firmly and lower it back onto the windshield slowly.
- Remove the microfiber towel.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the other front wiper blade.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and run the wipers on low speed for 10–15 seconds.
- Use washer fluid and check for smooth wiping with no streaks or missed areas.
- If a blade chatters, clean the windshield and blade rubber with glass cleaner and a towel.
