šŸ”§ Golf - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll be removing the old front wiper blades and snapping new ones onto the wiper arms. On your Golf, it’s best to put the wipers into ā€œservice positionā€ so you can lift the arms safely without hitting the hood edge.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass— it can crack the windshield.
  • āš ļø Use the wiper ā€œservice positionā€ so the arms clear the hood edge.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the spring-loaded hinge when lifting the arm.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Painter’s tape
  • Clean microfiber towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition ON, then turn it OFF.
  • Within about 10 seconds of turning the ignition OFF, tap the wiper stalk down once to move the wipers into service position. This parks them mid-windshield for access.
  • Place a microfiber towel where the arm might touch, and apply painter’s tape on the edge area as extra protection.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers in service position

  • Turn ignition ON, then OFF.
  • Within ~10 seconds, tap the wiper stalk down once to move the arms up.
  • Use microfiber towel and painter’s tape to protect the glass/edge area.

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Wear mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
  • Lift the arm gently until it stays up on its hinge.
  • Hold the arm any time the blade is off.

Step 3: Remove the old blade from the arm

  • At the connection point, find the small release tab/clip on the blade.
  • Press the tab with your thumb (no tools needed), then slide the blade down and off the arm.
  • Use the microfiber towel to rest the blade/arm if needed.

Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Line up the new blade connector with the arm’s hook/adapter.
  • Slide/push it into place until you hear/feel a click.
  • Lightly tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 5: Repeat for the passenger-side blade

  • Use the same process: lift arm, press release tab, slide old blade off, click new blade on.
  • Confirm both blades are fully seated and locked.

Step 6: Lower the arms and exit service position

  • Carefully lower each arm back onto the windshield.
  • Turn ignition ON.
  • Turn wipers ON then OFF once to return them to normal park position.

āœ… After Repair

  • Spray washer fluid and run the wipers at low speed to verify smooth wiping and no skipping.
  • Check that each blade is fully clipped in (no looseness at the arm connection).
  • If you see streaking, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
