How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2018 Toyota Prius
Step-by-step wiper service-position tips, required tools/parts, and install checks for streak-free wiping

🔧 Prius - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll replace the two front wiper blades (or just the rubber inserts) so they wipe cleanly and don’t streak, chatter, or smear. On your Prius, the wipers may sit partly under the hood edge, so you may need to put them in a “service position” before lifting the arms.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car fully OFF before working near the wiper mechanism.
- ⚠️ Don’t let the wiper arm snap onto the glass—place a towel on the windshield to prevent cracks.
- ⚠️ If the wiper arm hits the hood edge, stop and use wiper “service position” first.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge—spring tension is strong.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Clean microfiber towel
- Step stool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blade (driver side) - Match the length printed on your current blade - Qty: 1
- Front wiper blade (passenger side) - Match the length printed on your current blade - Qty: 1
- Front wiper rubber refill insert set - Optional (if reusing the blade frames) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the wipers are OFF.
- Put a clean microfiber towel across the windshield where the arms might touch.
- Check your current blade lengths (usually printed on the blade end cap). If not printed, measure tip-to-tip with a tape measure.
- If your wiper arms won’t lift without hitting the hood edge, use one of the “service position” methods in Step 1.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Move wipers to a safe service position (if needed)
- Try gently lifting each wiper arm by hand. If it clears the hood edge, you can skip to Step 2.
- If it does NOT clear, try this common Prius wiper service-position method:
- With the car OFF, press the POWER button to turn ON (do not press the brake), then press POWER to turn OFF.
- Within about 45 seconds, move the wiper stalk to MIST (one quick up position). If needed, hold it there for ~2 seconds.
- If your wipers still won’t move up: use your owner’s manual procedure for “wiper service position,” then continue.
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm safely
- Lift one wiper arm up until it stays up.
- Place the clean microfiber towel under the arm area as a safety cushion.
Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade assembly
- Rotate the blade so it’s perpendicular to the arm for easier access.
- Find the lock tab (the small plastic latch that holds the blade to the hook). Lock tab = the click-in release.
- Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s tight, use the small flathead screwdriver carefully to help press it.
- Slide the blade down and off the hook of the wiper arm.
Step 4: Install the new wiper blade assembly
- Confirm you have the correct side (driver vs passenger) by comparing length to the old blade.
- Slide the new blade onto the hook until it clicks into place.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.
Step 5: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–4 for the other wiper.
Step 6: Lower the arms and exit service position
- Carefully lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield (don’t let it drop).
- If you used service position, turn the car ON then OFF and tap/hold MIST again to return the wipers to the parked position (if required on your Prius).
Optional Step 7: Replace rubber refills instead of the full blade
- Only do this if your blade frame is in good shape (no bent metal, cracked plastic).
- Use the small flathead screwdriver to open the end cap or retaining clip on the blade (varies by blade style).
- Slide the old rubber out, keeping the two thin metal rails (if equipped) aligned for reuse.
- Slide the new rubber refill in the same direction, reinstall the end cap/clip, and confirm it’s fully seated.
âś… After Repair
- Spray washer fluid and run the wipers at low speed to confirm smooth, quiet wiping.
- Check that both blades park correctly and don’t contact the hood edge.
- If you see streaks, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel (road film can mimic “bad blades”).
