🔧 Avalon - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades on your Avalon is a quick job: you’ll remove the old blade assemblies from the wiper arms and snap on new ones. Fresh blades improve visibility and reduce streaking and chatter in rain.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Don’t let the bare wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- ⚠️ Support the wiper arm with one hand while removing/installing the blade.
- ⚠️ Work on a cool, dry windshield for best control.
- Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Microfiber towel
- Small flathead screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Lay a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area as a safety cushion.
- If your Avalon’s wipers feel “tucked” near the hood edge, use wiper service position below before lifting the arms.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in a safe position
- Try to gently lift each wiper arm by hand. If it lifts normally, continue to Step 2.
- If it won’t lift well because it’s close to the hood, use this common Toyota “service position” method:
- Turn ignition ON, then turn ignition OFF.
- Within about 45 seconds, move and hold the wiper stalk to MIST for ~2 seconds until the wipers move up to a service position.
- If it doesn’t work, try once more.
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm and protect the glass
- Lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Keep the microfiber towel on the glass under the arm.
- Hold the arm firmly with one hand the whole time.
Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade
- Find the small locking tab where the blade connects to the arm (the connector is a “J-hook,” which is a hook-shaped end of the arm).
- Press the locking tab with your fingers. If it’s stuck, gently assist with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Slide the blade down and off the hook.
- Don’t pry hard—tabs can snap.
Step 4: Install the new wiper blade
- Compare the new blade length to the old one to confirm you’re installing the correct side (Driver: 26", Passenger: 18").
- Slide the new blade onto the J-hook until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s fully latched.
Step 5: Lower the arm carefully
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly and gently.
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the passenger-side blade.
Step 6: Exit service position (if used)
- If you used service position, turn ignition ON and run the wipers once, then turn them OFF so they park normally.
âś… After Repair
- Spray washer fluid and run the wipers at LOW speed to verify smooth wiping and no streaks.
- Confirm both blades are seated evenly and not hitting the cowl (plastic panel at the base of the windshield).
- If you get chatter/skipping, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a clean towel, then retest.
