How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2018 Mazda CX-9
Step-by-step instructions, required tools and parts, connector types, and safety tips to prevent glass damage

🔧 CX-9 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll replace the rubber wiper blade inserts (the whole blade assembly) on the driver and passenger sides so the wipers clear water quietly and evenly. On your CX-9, this is a quick job, but the wiper arms can snap down hard—so we’ll protect the windshield and handle the clips carefully.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep the wiper arm from snapping onto the glass—place a towel on the windshield.
- ⚠️ Work with ignition OFF and wipers OFF so the arms don’t move.
- ⚠️ Don’t lift the wiper arm higher than needed; it’s spring-loaded.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required.

đź“‹ Before You Begin

- 🧻 Lay a towel on the lower windshield where the wiper arms could touch.
- 🔎 Check the new blades match your old blades in length and connector style before installing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the wiper arm
- Place the clean towel or thick shop rag on the windshield.
- Lift the wiper arm up until it stays raised on its own.
- Hold the arm anytime it’s unhooked.
Step 2: Remove the old blade (choose the connector type)
- Rotate the wiper blade so it’s perpendicular to the wiper arm (makes the clip easier to access).
- If you see a rectangular button on top of the connector (push-button style): press the button with your thumb (or use the small flat-blade screwdriver gently), then slide the blade down and off the hook/arm.
- If you see two small squeeze tabs on the sides (pinch-tab style): squeeze both tabs with your fingers, then slide the blade down and off the arm.
- Keep a hand on the arm so it doesn’t spring back.
Step 3: Install the new blade
- Compare the new blade connector to the old one before installing.
- Slide the new blade onto the arm until you hear/feel a click.
- Gently tug the blade with your hand to confirm it’s locked in.
Step 4: Lower the arm safely
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly.
- Remove the clean towel or thick shop rag.
Step 5: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the other front wiper blade.
âś… After Repair
- 🧼 Clean the windshield with glass cleaner (dirty glass causes streaking).
- đź’§ Test the washers and wipers at low speed first, then high speed.
- 🔍 If the blade chatters or streaks, re-check that it fully clicked into the arm.
