🔧 3 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll remove the old wiper blades from the wiper arms and snap new blades on. Good wiper blades restore clear vision in rain and prevent scratching the windshield when the rubber gets hard or torn.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working near the wipers.
- ⚠️ Do not let a wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- ⚠️ Put a towel on the windshield while the blade is off.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge points on the wiper arm.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Front wiper blade (passenger side) - Common size: 18" (verify on your blade) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🧼 Clean the windshield area where the blades sit.
- 📏 Verify sizes: look for the length printed on the old blade, or measure end-to-end with a tape measure.
- 🧩 Check the connector type on your old blade (the “connector” is the plastic clip that locks to the metal arm).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Move the wipers to service position (if needed)
- If your wiper arms won’t lift up easily (or they bump the hood), use the “service position” so the blades sit higher on the glass.
- Use this common Mazda procedure: turn ignition ON, then turn ignition OFF, then within 30 seconds move the wiper stalk to MIST (one quick swipe) twice.
- If your wipers do not move to a higher position, skip this step and carefully lift the arms as far as they allow.
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm safely
- Lift one wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Place a microfiber towel on the windshield under the arm as protection.
- Work one side at a time.
Step 3: Release the old wiper blade from the arm
- Look for the small plastic release tab where the blade connects to the arm.
- Press the tab with your fingers; if it’s stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to press the tab.
- Slide the blade down/out of the arm hook/clip until it comes free.
Step 4: Install the new wiper blade
- Compare the new blade to the old one for length using a tape measure.
- If your new blade includes adapters, choose the one that matches your old blade’s connector shape.
- Slide the new blade onto the wiper arm until you hear/feel a solid click.
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 5: Lower the arm back onto the glass
- Hold the arm and lower it slowly onto the windshield (don’t let it drop).
- Remove the microfiber towel.
Step 6: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other front wiper blade.
âś… After Repair
- 🧴 Add washer fluid if it’s low.
- 🧪 Test the wipers and washers: run wipers on LOW and HIGH and confirm no skipping or banging.
- 🔍 Check that both blades park correctly at the bottom of the windshield.
- 🧼 If they chatter, clean the glass and blade rubber with a damp microfiber towel.
