Step-by-step service position tips, correct blade sizes (26"/16"), tools, and safety checks

🔧 Optima - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll remove the old wiper blades from the front wiper arms and snap on new blades. On your Optima, putting the wipers into “service position” makes the arms easier to lift without hitting the hood.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF before lifting the wiper arms.
- 🛑 Protect the windshield: never let a bare wiper arm snap down.
- 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the hinge area when folding arms up.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Microfiber towel
- Small flathead screwdriver

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Optima on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition to OFF.
- Set the wipers to service position: with ignition OFF, within 20 seconds move the wiper stalk to MIST and hold about 2 seconds until the wipers move up where you can lift the arms.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield/cowl area as extra protection.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the wiper arms
- Carefully pull the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Do the same for the passenger-side arm.
- Keep a towel under the arm, just in case.
Step 2: Remove the old driver-side blade
- At the center where the blade meets the arm, locate the release.
- If it’s a push-button style: press the button and slide the blade down and off the hook.
- If it’s a pinch-tab style: squeeze the tabs and slide the blade down and off.
- If it’s stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help lift the locking tab. (Go slow to avoid breaking the tab.)
- Important: After the blade is off, do not drop the bare arm onto the glass.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade
- Match the new blade to the old one for length: driver should be 26".
- Slide the new blade onto the wiper arm attachment until you hear/feel a click.
- Lightly tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked.
Step 4: Repeat for the passenger-side blade
- Remove the old passenger blade the same way as Step 2.
- Install the new passenger blade: passenger should be 16".
- Lightly tug to confirm it’s locked.
Step 5: Lower the arms carefully
- Lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly by hand.
- Remove the microfiber towel.
âś… After Repair
- Turn ignition ON and run the front wipers on low for a few swipes.
- Use washer spray and confirm both blades wipe cleanly with no skipping or streaking.
- If a blade chatters, clean the windshield and rubber edge with a damp towel and retry.
