🔧 Ioniq - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll be removing the old rubber wiper blade assemblies from the front wiper arms and snapping new ones on. The key is putting the wipers into “service position” so you can safely lift them off the windshield.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the car OFF before handling wiper arms.
- 🛑 Do not let a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass—place a towel on the windshield to protect it.
- 🛑 Lift the wiper arm gently; don’t twist it sideways.
- 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the hinge points (pinch hazard).

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and make sure the wipers are not running.
- 🧼 Wipe heavy dirt off the windshield with a clean shop towel so you don’t drag grit under the new blades.
- 🎛️ Put the wipers into service position (so the arms can lift up safely): turn the car to ON (Ready not required), then turn it OFF, then within 20 seconds push the wiper stalk up to the single-wipe (MIST) position and hold it for about 2 seconds. The wipers should move up and stop.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the windshield
- Place a clean shop towel on the windshield under each wiper arm.
- This prevents chips if the arm snaps down.
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm
- Gently lift the wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up.
- If it won’t lift well, re-do the service position using the steps above.
Step 3: Release the old blade from the arm
- At the center where the blade meets the arm, locate the small locking tab (this is the “clip” that holds it on).
- Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently press the tab.
- While holding the tab, slide the blade down toward the base of the arm and off the hook.
Step 4: Install the new blade
- Match the new blade to the side you’re working on (Driver: 26", Passenger: 16").
- Slide the new blade onto the hook of the arm until you hear/feel a click.
- Lightly tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 5: Lower the arm carefully
- Remove the clean shop towel.
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly and gently.
Step 6: Return wipers from service position
- Turn the car ON and then OFF (or just start the car), and tap the wiper stalk once—wipers should return to their normal parked position.
âś… After Repair
- 🧪 Test the front wipers and washer spray. Confirm no skipping, chattering, or missed areas.
- đź’§ If they smear, clean the windshield and the new blade rubber with a damp towel.
- 🔍 Re-check both blades are fully clicked onto the hooks.
