🔧 Explorer - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades on your Explorer is a quick job that improves visibility and reduces streaking and noise. The key is getting the wiper arms into a safe “service position,” then swapping the blades without letting the arm snap back onto the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the hinge; the wiper arm spring is strong.
  • 🛑 Do not let a bare wiper arm slap the windshield—place a towel on the glass.
  • 🛑 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle to prevent accidental wiper movement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Microfiber towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Tape (painter’s tape)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the wipers are OFF.
  • Have your new blades ready and confirm the lengths by reading the size printed on the old blades (or comparing side-by-side in the package).
  • Lay a microfiber towel across the lower windshield area as protection.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers in “service position”

  • Turn the ignition ON, then turn it OFF.
  • Within a few seconds, use the wiper stalk to do a single wipe (one quick up/down command).
  • The wipers should stop partway up the windshield for easier access.
  • If they don’t park mid-glass, skip to Step 2.

Step 2: Lift the wiper arm safely

  • Lift one wiper arm away from the glass until it stays up.
  • Use painter’s tape to mark the blade’s resting position on the windshield (helps alignment).
  • Keep the microfiber towel under the arm area as protection.

Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade (two common connector types)

  • Look at where the blade attaches to the arm and choose the matching method below.
  • J-hook (hook-shaped arm):
    • Press the small release tab using your thumb (or a small flathead screwdriver gently).
    • Slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it.
    • Rotate the blade slightly as needed and lift it off the hook.
  • Push-button / top-lock (button on top of the connector):
    • Press the button firmly with your thumb.
    • Slide the blade straight off the end of the arm.

Step 4: Install the new wiper blade

  • Match the new blade to the same side you removed (driver vs passenger) by length.
  • J-hook:
    • Hook the new blade onto the arm’s J-hook opening.
    • Pull the blade up until you hear/feel a click and it locks.
  • Push-button / top-lock:
    • Slide the new blade onto the arm until it clicks.
    • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 5: Set the wiper arm back onto the windshield

  • Lower the arm carefully onto the glass—do not drop it.
  • Remove the painter’s tape.
  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other front wiper.

Step 6: Return wipers to normal park

  • Turn ignition ON.
  • Do one quick wipe using the stalk to let the wipers park normally.

âś… After Repair

  • Test washers and wipers on low speed to confirm smooth wiping and no chatter.
  • If there’s streaking, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
  • Re-check that each blade is fully clicked/locked onto the arm.
