How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2018 Cadillac XT5
Step-by-step wiper blade swap with correct sizes, connector types, tools list, and safety tips

🔧 XT5 - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll remove the old wiper blade assemblies from the front wiper arms and clip on new ones. The key is matching the correct blade length and connector style so they lock in securely and don’t chatter or fly off.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
Quick questions (so you buy the right blades):
- 🔹 What lengths are on your current blades (often printed on the blade/box), driver and passenger?
- 🔹 Does the blade attach with a J-hook (curved hook) or a pinch-tab/top-lock style connector?
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.
- 🔹 Carefully set the wiper arm down—don’t let it snap onto the glass (it can crack the windshield).
- 🔹 Put a folded towel on the windshield while one blade is off for protection.
🔧 Required Tools

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades (driver + passenger) - Match length + connector style - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹 Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🔹 Lift each front wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- 🔹 Place a folded towel on the windshield under the wiper area. Protects glass if arm slips.
- 🔹 If you don’t know blade sizes, use a tape measure to measure the rubber wiping length of each blade.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and position the wiper arm
- Lift the driver-side wiper arm up off the windshield by hand.
- Keep one hand on the arm while you work so it can’t snap back.
Step 2: Remove the old blade (J-hook style)
- If your arm ends in a curved hook, rotate the blade so it’s about 90° to the arm.
- Press the release tab with your thumb (use a small flathead screwdriver gently if it’s stuck).
- Slide the blade down and out of the hook, then remove it from the arm.
Step 3: Remove the old blade (pinch-tab / top-lock style)
- If the blade has a straight connector with squeeze tabs, pinch both sides of the connector.
- While pinching, pull the blade straight away from the arm to unclip it.
- If needed, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the locking tab (don’t pry hard).
Step 4: Install the new blade
- Compare the new blade to the old one using a tape measure to confirm the length matches for that side.
- Attach the new blade to the arm using the same connector style you removed.
- Push/slide it until you hear or feel a solid “click.” No click usually means not locked.
Step 5: Carefully set the wiper arm down
- Hold the arm and lower it gently onto the windshield.
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the passenger-side blade.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹 Remove the towel from the windshield.
- 🔹 Turn the ignition ON and test wipers on LOW, then HIGH.
- 🔹 Spray washer fluid and confirm both blades wipe cleanly without streaks or skipping.
- 🔹 If a blade chatters, clean the windshield and blade edge with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
