🔧 Equinox - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll be removing the old front wiper blades from your Equinox and snapping new ones into the factory wiper arms. This improves visibility in rain and helps prevent streaking and noise.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10–20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key so the wipers cannot move unexpectedly.
- 🛑 Keep the bare wiper arm from snapping back onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- 🛑 Do not bend the wiper arms; only move them at the hinge where they are designed to lift.
- 🛑 Work in a safe area away from traffic with the vehicle in Park and parking brake on.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park the Equinox on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition completely off so the wipers cannot move.
- 🧼 Clean the lower area of the windshield with the glass cleaner and microfiber towel so dirt doesn’t scratch the glass when you test the new blades.
- 🪟 Place a folded microfiber towel or cardboard on the glass where the wiper rests; this protects the windshield if the bare arm snaps down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- 🪜 If needed, stand on the step stool so you can comfortably reach the center of the windshield.
- Use your hand (no tools) to grab the driver-side wiper arm near the base and gently pull it away from the windshield until it locks in the raised position.
- Lift straight out, do not twist the arm.
Step 2: Locate the wiper blade release tab
- Look where the wiper blade connects to the metal arm; you will see a small plastic clip or tab on the blade’s adapter.
- This is the release tab, which locks the blade onto the hook-shaped arm.
- Take a moment to see how the old blade is attached.
Step 3: Remove the driver-side wiper blade
- With one hand, support the wiper arm so it doesn’t fall toward the glass.
- With your other hand, press or pull the plastic release tab (usually you press it inward toward the blade).
- While holding the tab, slide the wiper blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it from the J-shaped hook.
- Once free, slide the blade completely off the hook and set it aside.
- Move slowly; don’t let the bare arm hit the glass.
Step 4: Protect the windshield while the arm is bare
- Gently lower the bare wiper arm until it rests on the towel or cardboard you placed on the glass.
- This prevents the metal arm from chipping or cracking the windshield if it slips.
Step 5: Prepare the new driver-side wiper blade
- Open the packaging for the new 24" driver-side blade.
- Most new blades come with multiple plastic adapters; your Equinox uses a standard hook-style adapter.
- If the adapter is not already installed, snap the hook-style adapter into place following the diagram on the packaging.
- Match the new adapter to the old blade’s connector shape.
Step 6: Attach the new driver-side wiper blade
- Lift the driver-side wiper arm back up slightly off the glass, still supporting it with one hand.
- Hold the new blade so the rubber edge will face the windshield when installed.
- Slide the arm’s hook through the opening in the new adapter.
- Pull the blade up along the hook until it clicks firmly into place on the adapter.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it is locked and cannot slide off.
- Lower the arm and new blade back onto the windshield, resting on the towel, then remove the towel carefully.
Step 7: Repeat removal on the passenger-side wiper blade
- Lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays in the raised position.
- Support the arm with one hand.
- Press or pull the release tab on the old 18" passenger-side blade.
- Slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it, then remove it completely.
- Gently lower the bare arm onto a towel or cardboard if needed.
Step 8: Install the new passenger-side wiper blade
- Unpack the new 18" passenger-side blade and ensure it has the hook-style adapter installed.
- Lift the passenger wiper arm off the glass, supporting it with one hand.
- Feed the hook of the arm through the opening in the adapter.
- Pull the blade up into the hook until you feel and hear a click as it locks.
- Lightly pull on the blade to make sure it’s secure.
- Lower the arm and blade back onto the windshield gently.
Step 9: Clean the new blades and windshield contact area
- Spray a little glass cleaner onto the microfiber towel.
- Wipe the length of each new wiper blade’s rubber edge once or twice to remove any manufacturing residue.
- Wipe the area of the windshield where the wipers sweep to remove any leftover dirt.
- Clean blades work quieter and last longer.
Step 10: Top off washer fluid (optional but recommended)
- Open the hood using the interior hood release, then the safety catch under the front edge of the hood.
- Locate the washer fluid reservoir; it usually has a blue or black cap with a windshield/water icon.
- Open the cap and pour in washer fluid until it reaches near the top, then close the cap.
- Close the hood firmly.
âś… After Repair
- đźšż Turn the ignition on and spray the windshield washer while the wipers run for several passes.
- đź‘€ Watch both blades to confirm they:
- Clear water evenly without streaks or missed areas.
- Stay firmly against the glass without chatter or skipping.
- Do not hit each other or the windshield trim.
- 🔊 Listen for abnormal noises like loud squeaks or clunks; if you hear them, re-check that the blades are fully clipped into the arms.
- 🧾 Make a note of the replacement date; wiper blades typically last about 6–12 months depending on weather and sun exposure.
