🔧 Front Windshield Wipers - Blade Replacement

Your Golf uses a simple hook-style wiper blade setup, so this job is quick and beginner-friendly. The main goal is to swap both front blades and make sure they lock in properly so they clear the windshield cleanly in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before moving the wiper arms.
  • Put the wipers in service position so they lift away from the glass. Service position is the raised service mode that lets you work on the blades safely.
  • Keep the bare wiper arm from snapping back onto the windshield. It can crack the glass.
  • Do not let the metal arm touch the windshield while the blade is removed.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the ignition is off.
  • Move the wipers into service position before lifting the arms.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers in service position

  • With the ignition off, use the wiper stalk to move the front wipers into service position.
  • The arms should lift away from the windshield and stop in a raised position.
  • Work slowly to avoid snapping the arm.

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Use your hand to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the glass.
  • Support the arm so it does not fall back onto the windshield.

Step 3: Remove the old driver-side blade

  • Press the small release tab on the blade connector by hand.
  • Slide the blade down and off the hook-style arm.
  • Set the old blade aside.

Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Use your hand to slide the new blade onto the hook until it clicks.
  • Pull lightly on the blade to make sure it is locked in place.
  • Listen for a clear click.

Step 5: Replace the passenger-side blade

  • Lift the passenger-side arm carefully away from the windshield.
  • Use your hand to press the release tab and slide the old blade off the hook.
  • Install the new blade the same way and confirm it locks in place.

Step 6: Return the wipers to normal position

  • Lower both arms carefully back onto the windshield.
  • Cycle the wipers once to make sure they move correctly and park normally.
  • If they chatter or streak, recheck that both blades are fully seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Test the washers with windshield washer fluid.
  • Check both blades for smooth contact across the glass.
  • Make sure the arms rest evenly and do not lift off the windshield at speed.
